Position Overview

The primary duties of the Senior Traffic Engineer include collaborating with a traffic team on various traffic analysis needs for transportation projects. This role focuses on traffic analysis using modeling tools from Synchro to complex microsimulation models like VISSIM to analyze traffic scenarios, including signalized intersections, roundabouts, urban arterials, and freeway segments. The candidate should have experience leading or performing traffic analyses and developing reports to evaluate roadway capacity, operational analysis, and signal warrant analyses. They should also be skilled at presenting results to stakeholders and working with multidisciplinary teams.


The candidate will plan, organize, supervise, and review the work of staff professionals and technicians. They must function as a technical specialist, task lead, or project manager on projects. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, strong communication skills, and a desire to grow professionally as a project manager within a seller-doer environment. Building trust with clients and stakeholders is essential, as is leveraging experience to lead multidisciplinary project teams.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide design oversight for roadway, lighting, signing, pavement marking, traffic signals, and traffic management system plans; intersection design; capacity and signal warrant analyses; and Intelligent Traffic Sub-systems.
  • Assist in overseeing traffic control and sequencing plans during construction.
  • Serve as a technical expert in areas of specialization, resolving complex problems and planning projects with significant impact.
  • Organize and supervise work of professional and technical staff.
  • Serve as project manager on larger projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency with traffic operational analysis software such as Synchro, HCS, Sidra, VISUM, VISSIM, etc.
  • Experience modeling transit operations and transit signal priority in VISSIM.
  • Knowledge of programming scripts (Python, VBA, VBS, C#) is desirable.
  • Experience with safety analysis tools like ISATe and ISDHM.
  • Experience with GIS, traffic signals, ITS design, signing/marking, and MOT design.
  • Prior experience with Washington-area agencies is preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in ITS and traffic engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Knowledge of transportation regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and traffic analysis software.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
