Job description

The City of Raleigh is seeking Senior Trades Maintenance Specialists focused on skilled repair, maintenance, and equipment operation within a specific city maintenance or operational area. In this lead role, you'll take charge of performing and overseeing predictive, preventative, and corrective maintenance on facilities and equipment. You'll also train and support fellow team members while handling more advanced projects that require specialized trade knowledge or certifications. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to keeping city operations running smoothly.

About Us:

Engineering Services is a department dedicated to providing services to internal and external stakeholders through multiple divisions including Construction Management, Integrated Facility Services, Facilities and Operations, Vehicle Fleet Services, Roadway Design and Construction, and Stormwater. This position is assigned to the Facilities and Operations Division, which is responsible for a diverse number of functions and activities that serve the entire City organization such as day-to-day and preventive operations and maintenance of facilities, customer-based service deliverables, special events and meeting set-ups, emergency response in inclement weather, disasters, or emergencies, and critical equipment management.

About You:

We are looking to employ reliable individuals with knowledge of the basic trades maintenance principles to provide exceptional support for the Facilities and Operations Maintenance program. Must have a strong work ethic with positive orientation and willing to learn and grow to prepare for the potential of future advancement.

  • Performs and implements predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and facilities; diagnoses and repairs multi-trade systems and equipment.
  • Utilizes software to make adjustments to building automation equipment; uses schematics and blueprints; oversees preventive maintenance program.
  • Receives and responds to service requests, emergency calls, and on-call assignments; reviews and determines required maintenance and repair work.
  • Prepares required tools and equipment; provides technical guidance to others assisting in service work.
  • Resolves technical issues and implements solutions; reviews regulatory requirements and provides and assists in implementing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Monitors, inspects and maintains compliance with safety procedures and requirements; provides trade-specific specialized maintenance and repair work; repairs or replaces equipment.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and five years of formal trades experience in one or more areas related to assignment (HVAC, electrical, plumbing)

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Standard practices, methods and materials of trade skill and maintenance.
  • Able to operate assigned tools and equipment.
  • To recognize occupational hazards and apply safety principles and practices.
  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisors, the public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information.
  • Strong work ethic.

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work:

Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); frequent exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noise.
