  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive public accounting or tax experience.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing complex tax returns and managing client engagements.
  • Strong knowledge of individual, business, partnerships, S-Corps, and fiduciary taxation.
  • Proven ability to research and interpret complex tax regulations.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, or leading professional staff.
  • Strong client relationship management and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with modern tax software, research tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and decision-making abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of individual, business, trust, and fiduciary tax clients.
  • Review tax returns, workpapers, and other deliverables to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Lead tax planning engagements and develop customized strategies that align with client goals.
  • Serve as primary relationship manager for assigned clients and key accounts.
  • Research and resolve complex federal, state, and local tax issues.
  • Advise clients regarding entity selection, compensation strategies, retirement planning, succession planning, transactions and other tax-sensitive matters.
  • Manage engagement budgets, deadlines, workflows, and resource allocation.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop Tax Advisors and Tax Preparers, and other team members; review staff work, provide constructive feedback, and support professional development.
  • Identify opportunities for additional tax, advisory, and planning services that create value for clients.
  • Support business development activities through networking, referrals, and relationship building efforts.
  • Contribute to firm leadership initiatives, process improvements, and strategic planning efforts
  • Stay current on evolving tax laws, industry developments, and best practices.

Job Description

This is a remote position.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Tax Manager is a trusted advisor and team leader who guides client relationships, oversees complex tax engagements, and helps advance Sawtooth’s advisory-focused practice. This role partners with business owners, individuals, families, and other key clients to deliver strategic tax planning, technical excellence, and year-round guidance that goes beyond return preparation. The Senior Tax Manager manages a portfolio of engagements, reviews technical work, develops advisory opportunities, mentors team members, and supports the firm’s continued growth.

Position has potential to be remote, though preference would be in-office (Enterprise, Oregon or Ketchum, Idaho), or hybrid due to role in firm leadership. Only individuals eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship will be considered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a portfolio of individual, business, trust, and fiduciary tax clients.

Requirements

Prior responsibility for engagement budgeting, scheduling, and profitability.

Experience leading advisory engagements and strategic planning discussions.

Interest in helping expand broader advisory, financial planning, and consulting services.
