Position Overview


Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to join their growing CPA firm in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This role combines hands-on technical tax expertise with leadership responsibilities, overseeing complex tax engagements while mentoring junior staff and contributing to business development efforts. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in federal and state tax compliance, planning, and consulting across multiple entity types.

Key Responsibilities



Tax Compliance & Technical Expertise

  • Prepare and review complex federal and state income tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, LLCs, trusts, estates, and exempt organizations
  • Handle multi-state tax issues, including nexus determinations, apportionment, and state-specific compliance requirements
  • Manage tax provisions under ASC 740 for financial statement reporting
  • Research complex tax issues using CCH, BNA, RIA, and other professional tax resources
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance with current tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements
  • Handle IRS and state tax examinations, including correspondence and representation

Project Management & Client Service

  • Manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines
  • Serve as primary point of contact for assigned clients, building and maintaining strong relationships
  • Communicate complex tax concepts clearly to clients and provide strategic tax planning advice
  • Coordinate with audit teams and other service lines to ensure integrated client service
  • Prepare detailed tax planning memos and client advisory letters

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Supervise and mentor senior associates, associates, and staff accountants
  • Review work products for technical accuracy, completeness, and quality
  • Provide training and professional development guidance to junior team members
  • Participate in performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback
  • Foster a collaborative team environment and knowledge-sharing culture

Business Development & Firm Operations

  • Assist with proposal development and client presentations
  • Support marketing and networking activities to generate new business opportunities
  • Contribute to firm publications, seminars, and continuing education programs
  • Participate in professional organizations and maintain industry visibility
  • Support firm initiatives related to technology implementation and process improvements

Required Qualifications



Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA license in Maryland (or ability to obtain within 12 months)
  • Master's degree in Taxation or related field preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting
  • Experience with complex tax compliance for various entity types
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Public accounting firm experience strongly preferred

Technical Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in tax preparation software (CCH ProSystem fx, Lacerte, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state tax codes and regulations
  • Experience with tax research tools (CCH, BNA, Checkpoint, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with document management systems and client portals

  • Experience with state and local tax (SALT) issues
  • Previous experience in Maryland/DC metropolitan area tax environment

Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment with extended hours during tax season (January-April)
  • Occasional travel to client locations within the greater Washington, DC area
