Job summary

Uber is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer within the Autonomous Mobility & Delivery (AM&D) group in the United States. You will shape safety-critical frameworks enabling Uber to collaborate with AV partners while building internal autonomous capabilities.

You will define and enforce safety requirements, develop V&V strategies, and lead technical safety risk assessments to ensure Uber's platform meets stringent safety standards and performance goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 7+ years of experience in systems engineering with a significant focus on hardware/software integrations.
• Proven track record in the Autonomous Vehicle industry, specifically within safety-critical systems.
• Experience with V&V methodologies (e.g., ISO 26262, SOTIF/ISO 21448).

Responsibilities

• Define safety frameworks and solutions for diverse AV tech providers and fleet operators on Uber's platform.
• Elicit and document high-level and detailed system safety requirements for Uber's autonomous tech.
• Design Verification & Validation strategies for internal solutions and external AV integrations.
• Lead safety risk assessments to meet Uber's safety and performance standards.
• Influence long-term product roadmaps and strategic partnerships prioritizing safety and feasibility.

About The Role

As a Senior Systems Engineer in our Autonomous Mobility & Delivery (AM&D) group, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of autonomous transportation at Uber.

You will be responsible for the safety of the technical frameworks that allow Uber to integrate seamlessly with various autonomous vehicle (AV) partners while developing our own internal autonomous offerings. This role sits at the intersection of cutting- edge robotics, safety-critical systems, and complex platform integration. This role is on Uber's Autonomous Mobility and Delivery Safety team and reports to the Senior Manager, Systems Engineering, Autonomous Mobility & Delivery Autonomous Mobility & Delivery.

• Define partner-agnostic solutions: Develop and standardize technical safety solutions and frameworks that expedite the go-to-market process for diverse autonomous vehicle tech providers and AV fleet operators on the Uber platform.
• Define safety requirements for Uber-built autonomous offerings: Lead the elicitation and documentation of high-level and detailed system safety requirements for Uber's proprietary autonomous technology and platform services.
• Develop V&V strategies: Design comprehensive Verification and Validation (V&V) strategies for both internal Uber solutions and the complex technical interactions between Uber's platform and external AV Partner systems to ensure solutions meet Uber's safety bar.
• Safety Risk Assessment: Lead technical safety risk assessments to ensure that all AV partner integrations meet Uber's rigorous safety and performance standards.
• Influence Strategic Decisions: Act as a technical subject matter expert to influence long-term product roadmaps and strategic partnerships, ensuring technical feasibility and safety are at the forefront of business decisions.

Apply AI responsibly:

Evaluate and integrate AI/ML-driven approaches to enhance safety validation and risk identification, while ensuring appropriate oversight, traceability, and compliance with safety standards.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, with a significant focus on complex hardware/software integrations.
• Proven track record in the Autonomous Vehicle industry, specifically within safety-critical systems.
• Experience with V&V methodologies (e.g., ISO 26262, SOTIF/ISO 21448).

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Experience defining cross-functional system architectures for large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and executive leadership.
• Experience leveraging AI/ML tools in engineering workflows or safety analysis

For New York City, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For Seattle, WA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For Washington, DC-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
