Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a talented Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Remote | Department: Veterans Affairs (VA) | Type: Full Time | Min. Experience: Experienced | Security Clearance Level: Public Trust (MBI) | Salary Range: $109,623 - $126,790

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Act as the Edifecs Platform Manager leading the Edifecs application support organization, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment
• Provide technical oversight, manage staffing, and drive roadmap execution
• Partner with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams
• Guide architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies
• Configure and maintain XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules
• Guide Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Analysts with the building, deployment, and optimization of Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows
• Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks
• Manage system logging, Java Virtual Machine (JVM) tuning, and certificate/keystore configurations
• Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades
• Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, Cloud teams, and business teams

Required Skills and Experience

• Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles
• Strong experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environments
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• A hands-on understanding of the platform architecture and operational behaviors across the following: Edifecs XEServer (orchestrations, batch flows, execution contexts) | XEngine (validation, rulesets, canonical structures) | TPM (trading partner configuration, routes, agreements) | EDI Gateway (visibility, audit, search, and reprocessing) | SpecBuilder (Implementation Guide (IG) definitions, map development)
• Experience with EDI Integration and Interface Management of all technical aspects of inbound/outbound connectivity, consistent with the following: Applicability Statement 2 (AS2), Secure File Transfer Portal (SFTP), File Transfer Protocol Secure (FTPS), Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) channels
• Application Programming Interface (API)-based integrations and gateway services
• Experience with EDI troubleshooting providing root-cause analysis of transaction failures, mapping/misalignment defects, partner-specific rejection patterns, batch job flow failures, and throughput/performance degradation
• Experience with job throughput optimization, engine performance tuning, JVM tuning and memory management, high availability and failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards for proactive detection
• An understanding of AWS Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance sizing, Operating System (OS) tuning, storage Input/Output (I/O) patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) certificate lifecycle management
• Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows
• Compliance, audit, and partner governance knowledge
• Infrastructure as code experience (Ansible and Terraform)
• A strong ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
• Experience gathering and translating business reporting requirements into technical data models
• Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum and Kanban) and JIRA
• Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks
• An ability to work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams to ensure seamless production system operations

10+ years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering with strong AWS experience

Desired experience

• Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience in Electronic Data Interchange X.12 (EDI) Transactions Standards involving key X12 workflows involving the following transactions: X.12 medical claims (837, 834, 277, etc) 270/271 and 278 transactions
• Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture
• Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations
• AWS certification in a bonus

Formal Education

Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
