Job description

Job Description

System Engineers are responsible for technology integration in projects and complex automated systems. These individuals are part of a team that ensures adequate system level performance for automated pharmacy systems through close collaboration with hardware design, software, medical affairs, quality, and other functional groups. They have a broad knowledge base that includes domain expertise and fundamental engineering skills and can apply this knowledge to address issues from new product development projects through to sustaining activities. A systems engineer should also have a detailed understanding of the systems modules and subsystems and how they impact the top-level system. System Engineers are characterized by their disciplined, quantitative approach to system and technology integration as well as diverse cross-functional backgrounds and experience and a general knowledge of related disciplines. These individuals are responsible to implement best practices tools and processes, such as design for six sigma and BD's global product development system (GPDS) to enable more predictable product development and high-quality products.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practical, and consistent with objectives.
  • Exercises latitude in determining technical objectives of the assignment methods and in selecting techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining resolution based on risk-based assessment (including dFMEA analysis and input into product hazard analysis).
  • Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects, including product conceptualization and develops work plans to reduce concept to design. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions would result in serious program delays.
  • Contributes to management of product requirements and high-level design system and subsystem specifications, this includes conceiving, writing, tracing, characterizing and verifying specification performance.
  • Independently evaluates problems of moderate complexity and applies analytical/scientific principles to fulfill project and business objectives. Designs and performs development activity independently within defined parameters with minimal supervision.
  • Drives root cause investigations to troubleshoot customer issues in the field and resolve system difficulties throughout development.
  • Development of detailed subsystem workflow step and exception logic to guide software in development of instrument functions as well as to inform theory of operation for product/solution.
  • Ability to perform various analyses of automated systems including timing studies, control systems, and critical parameter identification and management.
  • Ability to support parallel projects and multi-task as priorities change.
  • Experience working in a lab environment independently and in collaboration with cross-functional engineers and lab staff as needed.
  • Collects, records, analyzes, interprets, reports, and, presents results to cross functional colleagues and leaders.
  • Responsible for employing design for six sigma (DFSS) and technology development best practices to manage technical risk and impart product robustness and reliability.
  • Contributes to system verification and validation activities including protocol writing, execution and reporting which will be used in regulatory submission.
  • Contributes to the transition from R&D to manufacturing/service and supports system troubleshooting activities for products in the field.
  • Liaison between R&D and quality/reliability functions to inform/support functions based on quality procedures including risk analysis, verification/validation for specific subsystems.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
