Senior Systems Engineer – Application Services
Senior Systems Engineer supporting a premier program within Raytheon, an RTX Business. In this role, you design and deliver common application capabilities for a next‑generation satellite Command and Control (C2) system within the Mission Engineering and Platform & Security Integration (PSI) Agile Release Train. You partner with software engineers, architects, and product leadership to define reusable application capabilities that improve consistency, reliability, observability, and developer productivity across the program. Work is on‑site in Aurora, CO.
What You Will Do
- Lead systems engineering activities for Application Services capabilities from concept through verification.
- Define functional behavior, interfaces, operational scenarios, acceptance criteria, and verification strategies for reusable application capabilities.
- Design common observability capabilities supporting application instrumentation, metrics, logging, tracing, health monitoring, alerting, and mission‑relevant operational awareness across mission‑critical services.
- Define standardized instrumentation approaches that enable application teams to consistently expose service health, mission flow, and mission outcome information.
- Develop verification strategies that validate application capabilities through automated unit, feature, integration, and end‑to‑end testing.
- Collaborate with software developers to design and, where appropriate, contribute automated test scenarios using modern testing frameworks such as Playwright or equivalent technologies.
- Develop reusable engineering artifacts, design patterns, shared services, and reference implementations that improve consistency and reduce duplication across application teams.
- Maintain a systems‑level perspective to ensure engineering solutions support mission objectives, operational needs, and long‑term maintainability.
- Participate in technical exchanges and collaborate with customers, industry partners, and cross‑functional engineering teams to ensure alignment of requirements and technical solutions.
- Partner with Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Cyber Engineering, and application development teams to ensure common capabilities integrate effectively into CI/CD pipelines, operational environments, and DevSecOps workflows.
- Participate in capability elaboration, technical reviews, demonstrations, integration events, and Program Increment (PI) Planning.
- Work within a closed‑area laboratory in Aurora, Colorado.
Required Qualifications
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
- Experience performing systems engineering on software‑intensive systems.
- Experience defining system behavior, interfaces, verification approaches, and acceptance criteria.
- Experience collaborating directly with software development teams in Agile development environments.
- Active and transferable U.S. government‑issued TS/SCI security clearance is required prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with software testing principles, including unit, feature, integration, and system‑level verification.
- Experience with application instrumentation, observability concepts, and defining mission‑relevant operational measures.
- Experience developing automated test scenarios using frameworks such as Playwright or equivalent UI/API automation tools.
- Experience designing observability solutions for distributed software systems.
- Experience with observability technologies such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent technologies.
- Experience with distributed systems, microservices, Kubernetes, or platform‑based application architectures.
- Experience with Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practices.
- Experience developing scripts and automation to support testing, application instrumentation, observability, or Infrastructure as Code (IaC) workflows.
- Experience incorporating AI technologies to support anomaly detection, intelligent alerting, predictive analytics, root cause analysis, and log intelligence.
- Experience developing reusable software frameworks, shared services, or common engineering capabilities supporting multiple product teams.
- Experience working with customers, operators, or external stakeholders to translate operational needs into engineering solutions.
