Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator in the Technology Resources department to administer and maintain complex systems, servers, networks, and virtual machines supporting campus clients. The role emphasizes reliability, security, and proactive problem-solving.

Responsibilities include leading deployments, monitoring performance, developing standards, mentoring staff, and coordinating with vendors.

Qualifications

• Work experience in systems administration training.
• Advanced knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in systems administration.
• Experience managing and administering systems components such as VMware, Windows servers, Linux servers, backups, mass storage, network hardware, and software and hardware firewalls.
• Experience writing scripts and/or SQL queries.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to identify problems by diagnosing application, system, and hardware logs (using third‑party tools such as Splunk) and make recommendations to resolve issues.
• Agree to be fingerprinted to comply with Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) policy requirements.
• Completed Security + certification
• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot complex systems, servers, networks, and virtual machines using manual and automated deployment and monitoring tools in support of client requirements, providing technical leadership and guidance to junior staff as needed.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve advanced hardware, software, or other network and system problems, serving as an escalation point for complex or high-impact issues.
• Coordinate with vendors and other technical teams to facilitate problem resolution.
• Configure and test computer hardware, business applications software, and operating system software.
• Recommend and lead changes to improve systems and network configurations and determine hardware or software requirements related to such changes.
• Monitor the performance of computer systems and design and implement system enhancements to improve the reliability and performance of the system.
• Develop and implement procedures to anticipate and proactively address issues.
• Maintain documentation related to systems and network functions, as well as maintenance and repair records.
• Develop and maintain system documentation, including standards and best practices.
• Mentor and cross-train team members and other Technology Resources staff to ensure appropriate system coverage.
• Provide backup systems administration support and act as a senior resource for other areas during on‑call assignments.
• Plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware, taking a lead role in defining security standards.
• Conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established policies and configuration guidelines.
• Manage backup systems and oversee data backups and recovery operations.
• Ensure data/media recoverability by designing and implementing a schedule of system backups.
• Investigate new technologies, attend seminars and training, and lead the implementation or recommend the adoption of new technologies and best practices.
• Participate in and help guide the evaluation of vendor products.
• Participate in and help drive planning activities to ensure longterm requirements of systems operations and administration are included in the overall information systems planning of the organization, contributing senior-level technical insight and strategic recommendations.
• Participate in on‑call rotation for after‑hours and weekend support.
• Other related functions as assigned.
