Job Description

The Senior Surveyor I and Above is considered an intermediate to advanced level Surveyor position. The primary function is to examine and report on vessels and other marine structures during and after construction, ensuring compliance with ABS classification requirements and statutory regulations related to Safety of Life at Sea, Loadline, Tonnage, Cargo Gear, and Pollution Prevention Certification. Responsible for administering office procedures and monitoring business performance at an assigned port as needed.

What You Will Do:

  1. Manage application development and management for Freedom, Engineering, and Client MyFreedom Portal products.
  2. Implement CBP integration with Freedom, including project planning.
  3. Knowledge of existing Freedom, MyFreedom Portal, and CBP apps/tools is advantageous.
  4. Establish positive relationships with clients and internal teams using strong organizational, communication, and troubleshooting skills.
  5. Apply rules, regulations, and standards as a professional specialist.
  6. Perform routine surveys on classed vessels, platforms, or other marine structures for classification and compliance.
  7. Prepare accurate and timely inspection and survey reports.
  8. Engage with clients to resolve issues within expertise areas.
  9. Maintain organized survey files.
  10. Stay updated on new methods and developments, recommending process improvements.
  11. Plan, schedule, and coordinate survey activities, monitoring quality of services.
  12. Supervise and guide lower-level surveyors, ensuring quality and consistency.
  13. Promote ABS services and capabilities to clients.

What You Will Need:

Education & Experience:

  1. Qualifications from a relevant tertiary institution or marine/nautical institution with seagoing experience.
  2. Minimum three years as a Surveyor II or equivalent experience.
  3. Understanding of ABS technical positioning or extensive engineering/survey experience with a classification society.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Relevant certifications/licenses.
  2. Knowledge of ABS rules, regulations, and safety policies.
  3. Ability to read engineering plans and understand shipbuilding practices.
  4. Proficiency with relevant computer software.
  5. Understanding of ship engineering systems.
  6. Effective communication skills in English.
  7. Problem-solving abilities.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Pre-employment physical exam may be required.
  2. Physical strength and stamina for climbing, working at heights, and confined spaces.
  3. Ability to lift at least 25 lbs.
  4. Compliance with safety procedures and PPE use.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to a Principal Surveyor or higher, may supervise lower-level surveyors, with possible administrative support.
