Job summary

The City of Long Beach is seeking a Lead Land Surveyor to manage survey parties and oversee complex fieldwork including hydrographic, geodetic, boundary, and construction surveying.

Responsibilities include planning procedures, supervising data preparation, reviewing maps and reports, and ensuring safe work practices in line with California Safety orders. A license in land surveying or civil engineering with surveying authority is required; bilingual skills are desirable.

Qualifications

  • Current licensure as CA Land Surveyor or CA Civil Engineer with surveying authorization.
  • Experience supervising survey field crews in hydrographic, geodetic, boundary and construction work.
  • Ability to use CAD and survey software and interpret deeds/maps.

Responsibilities

  • Direct field survey teams and oversee data collection and calculations.
  • Prepare and review tract maps, parcel maps and engineering improvement plans.
  • Oversee GPS real time networks and ensure safety compliance with California orders.

Education

Licensed Land Surveyor in CA with surveying authorization
Civil Engineer licensed with surveying authorization in CA

Job description

Under direction, manages the work of a group of survey parties involved in a wide variety of survey work as defined in the Professional Land Surveyor's Act; directs a field survey party engaged in the more difficult work involved in land surveying including hydrographic, geodetic, boundary and construction surveying; plans procedures to improve plans; supervises the preparation of field layout data; directs the office staff in the preparation and/or checking of tract maps, parcel maps, and engineering improvement plans; monitors GPS real time networks; researches deeds, maps and records for the preparation of descriptions; reviews control maps and reports; performs complex survey computations and adjustments; instructs assigned personnel in safe work practices and ensures work areas comply with California Industrial Safety orders; may use computer aided design and other related surveying software; may review software and prepare procedures manual; may assume duties of division/section head in his/her absence; and performs other related duties as required.

Applicants must meet one of the following options:

Option A. Current registration as a licensed Land Surveyor in the State of California (proof required) *.

OR

Option B. Current registration as a Civil Engineer authorized to practice land surveying in the State of California (proof required) *

*Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be place on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran's Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodicy and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period. Qualified candidates meeting the minimum qualifications with applications received by Friday, August 14, 2026, will be placed on Test #01 established eligible list for this recruitment. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
