Job summary

Lloyd's Register Applied Technology Group in Plymouth is seeking a Surveyor/Senior Surveyor to conduct survey, project management and advisory activities for Existing vessels, New Construction and Materials & components in the Devonport area.

You will produce deliverables to the required schedule and budget, review colleagues' work, discuss results with internal and external clients, and ensure operations comply with internal procedures, accreditation schemes and industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree or marine qualification
  • Membership of a professional institution required
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards)
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English at all levels
  • Experience with verification processes, product and rule development and project management is desirable

Responsibilities

  • Conduct survey and project management within existing vessels, new construction, materials and components.
  • Produce deliverables to agreed schedule, budget and quality standards.
  • Discuss and present deliverables with internal/external clients and propose solutions.
  • Ensure work complies with procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and standards.
  • Pursue CPD and maintain knowledge and awareness.
  • Assess time/value of work for external clients and assist in fee/cost structuring.
  • Mentor/coach colleagues to transfer knowledge.
  • Contribute to external client management and drive continuous service improvement.

Job description

What we are looking for
  • This position is based in HMNB Devonport, Plymouth, and covers the relevant activities in that area for Existing vessels, New Construction, Materials & components. Occasional work outside of this area is also expected to cover business needs. The role is primarily dealing with the survey of Existing vessels, New Construction, Materials & components activities and will be appointed at Surveyor or Senior Surveyor grade depending on experience and skills.

The Role
  • As a surveyor you will conduct relevant activities, undertake project management and provide advice for service delivery within own area of experience, adhering to budget constraints and contractual requirements.
  • Produce the deliverable to the agreed schedule, budget and quality levels within an appropriate format and take responsibility to review and monitor other employee’s work as requested.
  • Discuss and present the deliverable with the internal / external client and be able to suggest solutions as necessary.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness.
  • Assess or recommend the time and value of the work to be undertaken for an external client and to assist in identifying the most appropriate fee and cost structure.
  • Mentor / coach other employees, as appropriate, to achieve effective knowledge transfer and application.
  • Contribute to external client management; ensuring service delivery is continually improved through monitoring and acting on client feedback appropriately.
  • Ensure the appropriate authorisations are gained and are kept up to date. This may involve Activity Monitoring.
What you bring
Technical / Professional Qualifications / Requirements
  • Must hold or be eligible to achieve UK SC security clearance.
  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or Qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards)
  • To work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics
  • Previous experience of verification processes, product and rule development and project management with experience of delivering technical services and products within defined budgets and timescales.
  • To be able to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
  • To be able to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve engineering problems.
  • To provide technical and commercial leadership within the responsibilities assigned.
  • To demonstrate effective interpersonal skills including communication in English at all levels
