Job summary

DNV – Maritime Region Americas seeks a Junior Surveyor to join our West Coast team in Irvine, CA. You will perform surveys and certifications for ships in operation, including at manufacturer locations and ships under construction, ensuring compliance with international standards and DNV Rules.

You will work with a highly qualified team, traveling up to 25% annually, and support customers with technical queries while maintaining confidentiality and adherence to quality requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering; marine-related field preferred (Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering).
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Travel requirement: 25% per year (Domestic/International).
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Survey and certification of ships in operation for compliance with international standards, DNV Classification Rules, and statutory requirements.
  • Survey ocean-going ships that call at ports of call and at sea, including drydock and alteration surveys.
  • Review and respond to technical queries and design submittals regarding compliance.
  • Ensure work adheres to Rules, Regulations, Instructions, Guidelines and quality requirements; seek internal support as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Clients' business information; communicate important issues to line management.
  • Exhibit customer-oriented focus on board or on-site, acting as a technical resource for customer questions.

About The Role

DNV – Maritime Region Americas is seeking a Junior Surveyor to join our West Coast operations in Irvine, CA. As a Junior Surveyor for the West Coast you will be member of a highly qualified team of surveyors and auditors serving the more traditional shipping segments calling ports along the U.S. West Coast, performing equipment certification at manufacturer locations and surveys/audits on ships in operation, ships under construction at locations in U.S. West Coast.



  • Survey and certification of Ships in Operation for compliance with international standards, DNV Classification Rules, and Statutory requirements.

  • Survey ocean-going ships that call at ports of call and at sea, including drydock and alteration surveys.

  • Review and respond to technical queries and design submittals regarding compliance.

  • Ensure that the work or duties performed are in accordance with the Rules, Regulations, Instructions, Guidelines and quality requirements of the organization and the instructions of the line management.

  • Seek for internal support as necessary through experienced colleagues, line manager, Technical Support or equivalent.

  • At all times maintain the confidentiality of Clients' business intellectual property, processes, designs, developments, and documentation.

  • Communicate to line management at the earliest appropriate opportunity when in receipt of information that is important to the reputation or integrity of the organization.

  • Exhibit customer-oriented focus by promoting DNV onboard or on-site, and by acting as a technical resource for customer questions.

The actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. For the states of California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Washington only, the starting pay range for this role is $85,000-$100,000USD


About You

What is Required


  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering (Degree in marine related field such as Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering preferred) and/or equivalent.

  • Behavioral competencies: Team player, but able to work independently on surveys.

  • Travel requirement (% of the year) 25% per calendar year Domestic/International.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Physical abilities necessary to perform regular functions of the job on-board various marine vessels, structures, and offshore platforms include but are not limited to. The climbing of pilot ladders at various heights, going in and out of tanks, performing work in confined spaces, flying in a helicopter, pilot and/or boat transfers, voyage surveys, and working in harsh climates.

What Is Preferred


  • Maritime Industry experience (especially exposure to classification/statutory surveys or seagoing experience) is a plus. Required training will be provided.
