Job summary

Qualifications

  • Proficient in project documentation, reporting, and communication.

Summary

Balfour Beatty is looking for a Senior Superintendent to align with growth opportunities and active pursuits in the Richmond area. Current market opportunities include Aviation, State DGS CM@Risk projects and Data Center.

Essential Functions
Project Financial Responsibilities
  • Help the project manager review and update progress and cost reports, schedules, and requirements for completion on a regular basis.
  • Actively participate in development and management of the project’s general conditions, construction schedule, project planning/phasing, and buyout strategy during preconstruction.
Preconstruction Services
  • Participate in preconstruction planning regarding the project schedule and budget.
  • Review project estimates and cost control system at the beginning of the project.
  • Communicate with subcontractors and employees (along with the project manager) a consistent level of expectations and direction regarding schedules, construction methods, company policies and procedures, permits, safety/loss prevention, quality control, and other performance standards.
  • Ensure all employees have relevant safety/loss prevention training for their position.
  • Participate in making scopes for subcontracts and pre‑bid/post‑bid meetings.
Project Start‑up and Scheduling
  • Understand project specifications, contract, and general conditions, and confirm that all materials and subcontract work comply with contract documents.
  • Explore and advise the project team on appropriate changes in methods, materials schedules, and procedures.
  • Ensure all materials are properly tested according to specifications and that results are properly recorded.
Project Administration, Operations and Close‑out
  • Ensure that the project site and company assets are secure.
  • Communicate self‑reported safety roles, responsibilities and expectations to clients, operations staff, subcontractors, vendors and the public.
  • Manage and implement programs for safety, Equal Employment Opportunity, risk management, training, and quality control.
  • Manage and document employee and subcontractor problems or nonperformance with mentoring/training, disciplinary action, termination, back charges, or other appropriate actions.
  • Review and approve all bills for materials and subcontractor requisitions.
  • Facilitate weekly project progress and safety meetings with all subcontractor representatives.
  • Partner with Loss Prevention Professionals assigned to the project site.
  • Attend all progress meetings with owner/architect representatives.
  • Keep owners/architects informed of progress throughout the life of the project.
  • Ensure the project closeout process is finalized to settle all financial obligations, demobilize resources, and transition the project to the client.
Promote Customer Relations
  • Build effective relationships with customers, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and user groups.
  • Make presentations to proactively seek new business opportunities.

  • Provide challenging assignments, achievable and motivational development plans, and ongoing candid feedback.
  • Negotiate skillfully in tough situations while preserving relationships.

Working Conditions
  • The majority of work is completed on job sites in an office trailer or existing structure, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment as required by company safety policies and weather conditions.
  • The project team or member may need to move to other projected work geographic locations if necessary.
Education, Experience and Knowledge
  • B.S. in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred and 10+ years of experience, with at least 5 in supervisory/leadership roles.
  • Extensive experience managing trades/sub‑contractors.
  • Demonstrated success in leading, mentoring, and supervising multiple superintendents on large commercial construction projects from start to finish.
  • Mastery of field management skills: managing site activity, labor relations, field issue resolution, enforcement of site schedule requirements, safety, and insurance risks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to Zero Harm, knowledge of OSHA requirements, and current OSHA 30‑hour certification.
  • Proficiency using a PC, email, internet, Microsoft Office, Primavera P6, and other construction software.
  • Ability to help lead a proposal effort, including schedule, logistics, and general conditions development.
  • Solid presentation and verbal/written communication skills.
  • Commitment to quality by evaluating processes and making necessary changes based on customer input.

Pay Rate: $150,000-$175,000/year

An employee's pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs. No amount of pay is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable. The amount and availability of any bonus, incentive, or any other form of compensation that are allocable to a particular employee remains in the Company’s sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified at the Company’s sole discretion, consistent with the law and any applicable plan documents.
