Job summary

Somerville Public Library in Somerville, MA is seeking a Senior Substitute Librarian to join a cheerful, flexible team. You will staff public service desks, provide reference and readers’ advisory services, and assist patrons with computers and programs.

Part-time, up to 19 hours per week, evenings and weekends required. MLS/Masters preferred; strong customer service, communication, and multilingual abilities are valued. Salary is $29.14 per hour.

Qualifications

• Excellent reference and customer service skills, and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing are required
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and thoroughly
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library operations
• Multilingual ability preferred

Duties

• Staffs public service desks in Reference,Children’s, Teen, and Circulation departments at theCentral Library and at the branches as needed

• Assists library staff with programs and outreachinitiatives
• Interacts with the public cheerfullyand with tact
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library andInformation Science program preferred (students currentlyenrolled in an accredited graduate library school program,with current or past coursework in reference, readerservices, children and youth services, and related areas areencouraged to apply)

• Excellent reference and customer service skills,and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writingare required
• Ability to follow oral and writteninstructions accurately and thoroughly
• Knowledgeof the principles and practices of public libraryoperations
• Must be available evenings andweekends, up to 19 hours per week
