Job summary

Arup is seeking an experienced Substation Project Engineer to support HV/MV substations for BESS, PV, Data Center and Utilities. This role can be worked out of our Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angles or Austin offices.

You will coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities, manage scope, schedule and budget, and lead meetings with clients, utilities and vendors. The role requires a PE, 10+ years HV substation design and travel as needed.

Qualifications

• BS in electrical engineering (or related field) required.
• At least 10 years of experience in high-voltage substation design (15kV–345kV) per IEEE/ANSI.
• PE licensure is required.
• Experience delivering substations through feasibility, detail, procurement, construction and commissioning.
• Experience with EPC/design-build and engineer-of-record delivery models.

We are seeking an experienced Substation Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of high-voltage and medium-voltage substation projects associated with BESS, PV Solar, Data Center and Utilities.

This position can be worked out of our Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angles or Austin offices.

The Opportunity

• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities for new substations, expansions, upgrades and retrofit projects.
• Develop and manage project scope, schedule, budget, deliverables and engineering execution plans.
• Serve as the primary coordination point among electrical, civil, structural, protection and control, SCADA, telecommunications and other project disciplines.
• Coordinate technical requirements, design inputs and project interfaces with clients, utilities, contractors, equipment vendors and other stakeholders.
• Lead internal and external project meetings, document decisions and track action items through completion.
• Review project specifications, design criteria, single-line diagrams, equipment layouts, grounding designs, protection and control drawings and other engineering deliverables.
• Ensure consistency and proper interface management across all engineering disciplines.
• Coordinate the preparation, review and issuance of drawings, calculations, technical specifications, reports and construction packages.
• Support major equipment procurement, including technical specifications, bid evaluations, vendor drawing reviews and resolution of technical comments.
• Coordinate equipment interfaces for transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, instrument transformers, protection panels, control buildings and auxiliary systems.
• Identify project risks, design conflicts, scope gaps and schedule constraints, and work with the project team to develop appropriate solutions.
• Monitor engineering progress, budget performance, schedule milestones and changes in project scope.
• Manage technical queries, requests for information, design changes and engineering documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support permitting, utility interconnection, construction, testing, commissioning and project closeout activities.
• Participate in site visits, design reviews, constructability reviews and commissioning support, as required.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable client requirements, utility standards, codes, regulations and industry best practices.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Be ready to stamp drawings associated with electrical scope of the work

Is this role right for you?

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably Electrical).
• At least 10 years’ experience in 15kV through 345kV physical utility substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
• Experience delivering substation projects through feasibility, detailed design, procurement, construction and commissioning.
• Experience with utility, renewable energy, energy storage, industrial or data-center interconnection projects.
• Familiarity with EPC, design-build and engineer-of-record delivery models.
• Experience managing design changes and coordinating work within operating brownfield substations.
• Project Management Professional designation or formal project management training is considered an asset.
• Excellent communication skills — able to interact with clients, regulatory bodies, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Ability to represent the company credibly.
• Willingness to travel occasionally as needed (site visits, client/vendor meetings).
• The ability to prioritize work effectively, manage deadlines and organization skills required for our rapidly changing environment.

San Francisco Hiring Range – Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in San Francisco is $140,000 – $175,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of San Francisco will differ.
