Job summary

Alpha 3 Consulting is seeking a Senior Physical Substation Engineer in Elkridge, MD for a full-time, hybrid schedule (3 days in office, 2 from home). Position supports design, layout, and client interaction for substation projects.

The role requires 7+ years of relevant experience, a degree in electrical engineering, and familiarity with NEC/NESC, with Microstation/AutoCAD proficiency. PE strongly preferred and relocation options may be available.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in electrical/electronics engineering required.
• Master’s degree in electrical power engineering preferred.
• PE license strongly preferred; 7+ years of relevant experience including physical layout and substation design.
• Knowledge of NEC and NESC required.
• Experience with Microstation and AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, evaluate, and create new designs and drawings; revise existing designs and drawings.
• Develop substation single line diagrams, facility studies, and equipment plans in collaboration with Designers and Engineers.
• Prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
• Provide design reviews, mentorship, and feedback to team members.
• Meet with clients and conduct walk downs as needed.

Job Title: Senior Substation Engineer (Physical)Location: Elkridge, MDPOSITION DESCRIPTION

Alpha 3 is seeking a Senior Physical Substation Engineer. This is a full‑time position with a hybrid work schedule. Three days per week (typically Tuesday‑Thursday) are expected to be in the office and two days per week from home. Preferred office location Elkridge, MD. Other locations may be available, depending on the candidate’s qualifications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Analyze, evaluate, and create new designs and drawings; revise existing designs and drawings
• Work in an integrated project team environment with Designers and Engineers to develop substation single line diagrams, facility studies, general arrangement, equipment plans and sections, foundation plans, grounding and conduit plans, equipment connection details, control building plans and sections.
• Prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
• Provide design review, constructive feedback and mentorship
• Meet with clients and conduct walk downs as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate degree in electrical/electronics engineering or a closely related field
• Master’s degree in electrical power engineering preferred
• PE strongly preferred
• 7+ years of relevant experience, inclusive of physical layout and substation design
• Utility project experience with strong knowledge of electrical codes including NEC and NESC is required
• Knowledge of Microstation and/or AutoCAD
• Ability to work on a team and on multiple projects
• Ability to understand and incorporate comments and feedback
• Ability to provide design reviews
• Ability to adapt to various client standards and procedures
• Personal time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines
• Attention to detail and pride in work product quality
• Ability and willingness to support and mentor more junior team members
