Job summary

National Grid plc in Syracuse, NY seeks a Senior Substation Engineer to influence high‑impact transmission and distribution projects across New York. You will lead conceptual engineering, develop cost‑effective substation solutions, and champion the Design to Value program in collaboration with cross‑functional teams.

You will mentor engineers, coordinate with project management, and drive capital‑efficiency initiatives to improve grid reliability and resilience.

Qualifications

BS in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from ABET‑accredited program.
Six years of engineering experience without PE, or four years with PE.
PE license preferred or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
Knowledge of industry standards, safety requirements, and electrical design codes for substations.
Valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
Strong communication and collaboration across disciplines.

Responsibilities

Define substation scope of work from project needs and evaluate options for feasibility and cost.
Support scope development using engineering standards, drawings, and GIS data.
Lead authorship of conceptual engineering reports and coordinate with multi‑discipline engineers.
Provide technical leadership and mentor others on projects of moderate to high complexity.
Organize and manage multiple projects with tight schedules and deliverables.
Maintain NERC/CIP qualifications and project documentation.
