Job description

Senior Substation Engineer – Join our project team to lead the electrical design and project management of high voltage substation projects.

Responsibilities
  • Take an active role in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve a wide variety of electrical engineering issues.
  • Prepare clear and concise technical and project reports that meet client requirements and formatting standards.
  • Collaborate on peer‑learning initiatives and share knowledge through Communities of Practice.
  • Travel to client sites as needed.
Leadership & Automation
  • Lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows and reduce rework.
  • Direct automation and process‑improvement work, including automating calculations, summarizing documents, and guiding AI tool usage.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script (Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate tasks; review automated outputs.
  • Encourage additional learning in Computer Science, AI, Software Engineering, or related fields to support AI‑enabled engineering workflows.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Engineering degree.
  • 5 or more years of experience in the design of medium voltage power systems.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects under budget and time constraints.
  • Experience tracking project information such as schedules, expenditures, status reports, and client interface.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
Valued but Not Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering degree (preferred).
  • Degree from an ABET accredited engineering program.
  • 3 or more years of experience designing substations at 138kV and above.
  • Ability to prepare substation grounding calculations, direct stroke shielding calculations, battery & charger sizing calculations.
  • Physical layout and protection & controls experience.
  • Ability to work with designers to develop substation single line diagrams, relaying & metering diagrams, DC schematic diagrams, substation plans & sections, grounding plans, etc.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/IEEE/NEMA standards, including the National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI – C2).
  • PE license.
  • AutoCAD experience.
