Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer (Buildings and Water) to lead structural design efforts and collaborate with architects and discipline leads. You will coordinate through design development, support code compliance reviews, and mentor junior engineers while delivering high-quality building solutions.

The role emphasizes independent work, team leadership, and effective communication within a multi-disciplinary environment, ensuring design integrity and project success in HDR’s Building

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and PE license.
  • Minimum 10 years of structural engineering experience related to buildings.
  • Professional Engineer license recognized by the licensing board for the location.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar software.
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts; ability to design/ detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood.
  • Understanding of gravity and lateral analysis; experience with architecture/engineering firms.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with architects and other engineering leads to develop designs and drive projects forward, independently or with small teams, mentoring EITs.
  • Coordinate the structural design team through design development and contract document phases.
  • Attend reviews with governing agencies for code compliance.
  • Lead design development and document sessions at project sites with PM and other disciplines.
  • Manage workload through design development and construction document phases to meet schedule.
  • Coordinate with affected disciplines on addenda, RFI responses, change proposals, and change orders.
  • Perform site visits and lead construction administration efforts.
  • Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and sizes, and perform calculations.
  • Review structural documents for conflicts with other disciplines and standards.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.

In the role of Senior Structural Engineer (Buildings and Water), we'll count on you to:

  • Collaborate with architects and other engineering discipline leads to develop designs and drive projects forward, working independently and/or leading small project teams and mentoring EIT’s.
  • Independently coordinate the work of the structural design team through the design development and contract document phases of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance
  • Conduct design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines
  • Take responsibility for coordinating workload through design development and construction document phases to complete the documents on schedule
  • Coordinate and assist with affected disciplines, with any addendum, requests for information, change proposal requests and change orders, and incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents.
  • Perform site visits and lead construction administration efforts.
  • Write and edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations.
  • Review structural documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines and best practices/industry standards.
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, Structural emphasis
  • 12 years of progressive structural engineering experience on projects of similar scale and complexity to HDR’s.
  • Strong communication skills and emerging leadership aptitude with an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Knowledge of building codes such as IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, and TMS.
  • Interest in structural engineering related to buildings or water facilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design
  • Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
  • Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar analytical software
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, masonry and wood
  • Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
