Job description

About the Role

At Luckett & Farley, we believe design is a promise — to our clients, our communities, and the future we share. We're looking for a Structural Engineer to be a core team member on complex projects, bringing hands‑on experience across all building types, alongside the curiosity, vision, and passion for architecture and engineering design that defines our culture.

This role works closely with project leadership from early concept through construction administration, contributing meaningful design and technical expertise across a diverse portfolio- and supporting the broader Structural Department as needed.

What You Will Do
  • Independently lead the structural engineering design effort for assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • Mentor and teach junior‑level engineers and designers with patience and professionalism, fostering a supportive and collaborative learning environment. Provide guidance on design concepts and lead teaching discussions with approachability and respect.
  • Assist with developing fee proposals, including preparation of scopes of work, determination of structural fees, coordination of marketing/resume materials and coordination of contracts.
  • Assist Department Manager with developing project plans and budgets including all staffing and resource needs.
  • Assisting Department Manager with setting discipline project milestones, deadlines, and profitability targets, and monitoring they are met.
  • Monitoring scope creep to determine if additional services are warranted.
  • Planning and conducting internal and external project meetings, as required.
  • Taking full ownership and managing of all discipline aspects of projects from conception to completion.
  • Preparing preliminary designs and selecting appropriate structural systems.
  • Troubleshooting analysis problems.
  • Performing quality control and constructability reviews.
  • Monitoring staffing/resource needs and reporting up to Department Manager.
  • Collaborating with other Senior Structural Engineers to manage workload distribution and project resources to ensure appropriate staffing of projects.
  • Recruiting and interviewing job candidates.
  • Promoting L&F services and reputation in local markets by participating in appropriate industry, professional, and community organizations.
  • Clearly explain complex concepts to diverse audiences, adapting communication style to suit varying levels of understanding and expertise.
  • Present and articulate ideas with professionalism, tact, and confidence, ensuring a positive representation of themselves and the company.
  • Demonstrate strong emotional intelligence, fostering collaboration and building positive relationships with clients and co‑owners.
What We're Looking For
Key Success Factors
  • Excellent working knowledge of and proficiency with building analysis and design software for concrete, steel and wood, such as: RAM Structural System, RAM Elements, SAP2000, ETABS, Woodworks, or similar.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Working knowledge of REVIT.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Exhibits “self‑starter” characteristics.
  • Able to properly assess and take appropriate action to identify, and problem solve during design or in the field construction.
  • Exhibits a high sense of personal motivation and urgency coupled with appropriate action.
  • Other activities not specified here, that may become necessary as the company, position or the marketplace evolves with the changing business environment.
Your Qualifcations
  • BS or Masters Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 10+ years’ experience with progressive increase in responsibility.
  • Professional registration as PE (SE preferred) in the State in which the office they are based is located.
The Right Mindset
  • Team player and collaborator.
  • Passionate about all things’ engineering design; you care deeply about how buildings and surrounding sites make people feel and how they shape communities
  • Genuinely curious — you ask better, deeper, unexpected questions before jumping to solutions.
  • Hungry for knowledge — you actively seek out new ideas, emerging materials, and evolving design approaches
  • Committed to delivering high‑quality results reliably and taking full ownership of outcomes.
  • A clear, effective communicator who is direct, easy to work with, and responds quickly and thoughtfully to client needs, feedback, and challenges.
  • Highly organized, with a strong sense of personal ownership and follow‑through.
  • Resilient under pressure; you address conflict constructively and keep relationships productive through difficult moments.

As a 100% employee‑owned firm founded in 1853, we offer more than a career, we offer a meaningful stake in a legacy of excellence and a shared future. Our integrated practice spans architecture, engineering, interior design, and development, providing a unique opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and grow your expertise within a highly connected team.
