Job summary

Our client in the energy sector seeks a Senior Structural Engineer focused on substations in Houston. This permanent role supports designs across power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government, and military facilities.

Key responsibilities include leading design from concept to completion, preparing specs and data sheets, reviewing vendor drawings, and managing project schedules and budgets.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited degree in structural engineering or equivalent with FE/PE pathway.
• Experience leading design for large EPC projects.
• PE licence preferred; strong codes knowledge (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7).
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to travel as required.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural design from concept through design completion for substation projects.
• Prepare specs, data sheets, RFQs, bid summaries, and purchase recs.
• Review vendor drawings and liaise with suppliers, clients, and other disciplines.
• Develop project schedules, scopes, budgets, staffing, and construction plans.
• Perform quality reviews of drawings and construction administration.
• Lead field inspections, measurements, and calculations for public and private clients.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build relationships with clients, customers, and contractors; support sales efforts.
• Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements; mentor junior engineers.

Our client, a leader in the energy sector, is currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with a focus on substation projects to join their team in Houston. This permanent role is integral to delivering world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments across various sectors, including power, process, corporate, healthcare, pipeline, airports, institutional, industrial, manufacturing, government, and military facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead structural design from conceptual phase through design completion, ensuring all project needs and requirements are met.
• Prepare structural equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
• Review structural vendor drawings and liaise with suppliers, clients, and other engineering disciplines.
• Develop project schedules, scopes, budgets, staffing, and construction plans, managing change orders effectively.
• Utilise expert knowledge of structural concepts, practices, codes, and procedures to tackle complex projects.
• Conduct quality reviews of production drawings and construction administration.
• Lead field inspections, installations, measurements, and calculations for both public and private clients.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with clients, customers, and contractors.
• Assist with sales and marketing initiatives and identify new business opportunities.
• Lead the development of cost proposals and qualification statements.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to less experienced engineers.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, OR
• Bachelor's Degree in Structural Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with FE exam completion, OR
• Master's Degree in Structural Engineering with significant experience.
• Extensive experience in structural engineering, preferably in EPC projects.
• Expert knowledge in standard structural design codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7).
• Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience leading design for large projects and guiding team members.
• Strong problem-solving, organisational, and analytical skills.
• Ability to perform detailed quality reviews and travel as required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) Licence preferred.
