Job summary

McCarl's Technical Services is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to lead civil/structural design for heavy industrial projects in power, chemical, metals, and oil & gas sectors. The role involves coordinating design work, providing technical guidance, and mentoring a project team.

Responsibilities include design of steel structures, foundations, 3D modeling coordination, and cost estimation support, with site visits and cross-discipline collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil or structural engineering with experience in civil/structural design for heavy industry.
  • Professional Engineer license is preferred.
  • Display a good working knowledge of industry standard design practices, good mechanical aptitude and general knowledge of engineering.
  • Understanding of design code standards and specifications (ASME, ASCE, ACI, AISC, IBC).
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Proficient in the use of structural design and analysis tools (STAAD, or similar) and knowledgeable about the use of 3D model tools (Advanced Steel, SDS, or similar) in the engineering discipline.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word with intermediate skills in Excel and Outlook.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with all levels in the company.
  • Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships (both internal and external).
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information.
  • Possess (or ability to obtain) OSHA 30
  • Ability to safely visit sites to walk down scope and meet with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Develop sketches and coordinate the completion of associated 3D models with the design team.
  • Lead Design Reviews and Lesson Learned sessions.
  • Provide cost estimating support for civil/structural proposals (hours, quantities, etc.).
  • Performance of multiple projects on a continuous basis.
  • Effective cross-discipline and cross-department communication and coordination.
  • Ability to safely visit sites to walk down scope and meet with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides technical support on construction or operating sites, as needed.
  • Provide technical oversight, mentorship, and peer review in the Design team.
  • Monitor and report weekly on the status of current civil/structural design projects.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and professional development of team personnel.
  • Communicates technical information effectively with clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Effectively communicate and project the principles of the Talent Advantaged Roadmap.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager / supervisor.

Job description

General Purpose:

The Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for leading the structural engineering and design of heavy industrial projects across the power, chemical, metals, and oil & gas sectors. The Senior Structural Engineer ensures engineering deliverables are technically sound, consistent with established standards, and aligned with project schedule, cost, and MTS standards for safety, quality, and efficiency. Sr. Structural Engineers may individually contribute to a project or may be asked to lead a team of engineers and designers on a project basis.
