Job description

Position Summary

Senior Structural Designer (BIM Integration Lead) provides advanced drafting, modeling, and coordination support for marine and heavy civil structures including bulkheads, dolphins, trestles, bridges, piers, and terminals. This position acts as a technical and digital leader within the Engineering Department — responsible not only for the production of accurate, constructible design deliverables, but also for advancing digital design standards, mentoring staff, and shaping the department’s growth and technical direction. The Senior Structural Designer plays a vital role in Orion’s ongoing digital transformation by integrating field data, construction feedback, and cutting-edge modeling techniques into the engineering process. This role directly supports Orion’s guiding values of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, built upon the foundation of Integrity.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Actively lead and manage the design and BIM team, ensuring coordination, technical quality, and timely delivery of project drawings and models.
  • Provide daily guidance and workload management to designers, modelers, and technicians to balance resources and meet project milestones.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for all design production matters, ensuring alignment with engineering and construction requirements.
  • Provide senior-level drafting and design leadership for marine and heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare detailed design drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, and construction details using AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D.
  • Perform 3D modeling of both existing and new structures to support design development and constructability reviews.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to ensure all design deliverables meet quality and schedule requirements.
  • Develop visualization aids (sketches, renderings, animations) to communicate design intent and support proposals or client presentations.
  • Identify geometric constraints or inconsistencies and propose technical solutions.
  • Review and approve drawing sets prepared by junior staff, maintaining Orion’s standards of accuracy and presentation.
  • Maintain and update company drafting and modeling standards, ensuring consistent practices across projects.
  • Mentor and train junior designers, fostering a learning environment that promotes growth and accountability.
  • Coordinate design activities across civil, structural, and marine disciplines to ensure full integration.
  • Act as the primary link between design and construction teams, facilitating field-driven design adjustments.
  • Participate in project coordination and constructability meetings to address modeling or design issues.
  • Provide technical insight and leadership for implementing new digital tools and workflows within the department.
  • Support departmental recruitment, onboarding, and capability development, helping grow Orion’s in-house design and modeling capacity.
BIM & Digital Integration Responsibilities
Model Coordination & Integration
  • Lead the development and management of 3D BIM models for all structural and marine scopes.
  • Federate models from engineering, diving, dredging, and construction into a single, clash-free environment.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and consultants using Revit, Civil 3D, and Navisworks.
  • Ensure accurate geometric representation aligned with field conditions and design intent.
Design Data Management
  • Maintain Revit and CAD libraries, templates, and shared parameters.
  • Manage multi-discipline model coordination through BIM 360 and ensure version control.
  • Export validated data for estimating, procurement, and fabrication workflows.
Clash Detection & Quality Control
  • Run and manage clash detection reviews across all disciplines.
  • Facilitate weekly coordination meetings and track resolution of design conflicts.
  • Generate QC reports and ensure models meet Orion’s BEP (BIM Execution Plan) standards.
Field Coordination & Construction Integration
  • Generate shop drawings, pile layouts, and lifting diagrams from 3D models.
  • Integrate survey, dive, and ROV data into as-built models for accurate documentation.
  • Develop 4D visualizations and phasing diagrams to communicate sequencing and means and methods.
Data Exchange & Collaboration
  • Lead coordination between Orion Engineering, Construction, and external design partners.
  • Support integration of modeling data with InEight (estimating), Primavera P6 (scheduling), and SAP2000.

  • Collaborate with leadership to identify technology investments and implement new digital workflows.
  • Serve as an internal subject matter expert for BIM integration, marine structure modeling, and digital collaboration.
  • Promote cross-discipline communication between engineering, construction, and estimating.
  • Champion Orion’s digital vision by leading workshops and internal training for new modeling techniques.
  • Assist in developing recruitment strategies and evaluating design software, tools, and licenses.
