Job summary

Shield Consulting Solutions, Inc. is seeking a senior Storage Engineer in Laurel, MD to design, deploy, and support complex storage and backup platforms.

The role involves leading capacity planning, performance tuning, and integration with hypervisor technologies across multiple data centers. You will ensure high availability, implement security hardening, and create comprehensive technical documentation while collaborating with a cross-functional team on critical national security projects.

Qualifications

• Hands-on NetApp experience required.
• Storage tech knowledge: SAN/NAS, protocols S3, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, FC.
• Experience with capacity planning and sizing storage/backup environments.
• Senior-level design/maintenance of large-scale cross-site systems.
• Strong HA concepts and TCP/IP fundamentals.
• Experience connecting storage arrays to hypervisor tech (Nutanix, VMware VCF, OpenStack).
• Security best practices and Federal hardening (FISMA/STIG).
• Excellent written and verbal communication; team player.

Responsibilities

• Design, architect, configure, deploy, upgrade, and support storage/backup platforms.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot storage systems and related tech.
• Adhere to standards and participate in technical reviews.
• Evaluate, deploy, manage, and integrate new technologies with other engineers.
• Provide incident support and participate in on-call rotations.
• Create and maintain diagrams, run books, and engineering docs.
• Oversee installation of storage hardware/software per SOPs.
• Monitor systems and collect capacity/performance/utilization data.
• Stay abreast of storage/backup tech for national security needs.

Job Description

• Design, architect, configure, deploy, upgrade, and support various storage and backup platforms and associated management tools
• Diagnose and troubleshoot storage systems and other related technologies
• Adhere to engineering and architecture standards and participate in technical review meetings as required
• Participate in the evaluation, deployment, management, and integration of new technologies in alignment with other engineers, architects, and technical service lanes
• Provide incident support and participate in on‑hours and off‑hours and weekends on‑call rotation
• Create and maintain documentation: logical/physical diagrams, run books, and other technical engineering documents
• Demonstrate initiative and commitment to optimizing systems and processes
• Oversee the installation of new storage hardware and software according to standard operating procedures
• Oversee updates to hardware, operating systems, and software as needed to provide required functionality and security
• Ensure systems are monitored and statistics relevant to capacity, performance, utilization, etc., are collected and regularly reviewed
• Keep abreast of current developments in storage and backup technology to assist Federal staff in assessing the future direction of storage and backup technology

Required Experience

• Hands on NetApp experience a MUST
• Hands‑on engineering experience with NetApp and other storage technologies and concepts (Storage Area Network - SAN & Network Attached Storage - NAS)
• Must have knowledge and understanding of protocols such as S3, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, and Fiber Channel Block Storage (SAN)
• Experience with capacity planning and sizing storage and backup environments (to include Veritas NetBackup, Cohesity, Rubrik, & CommVault)
• Experience in performance tuning and optimizing storage and backup environments
• Experience with data center migrations and storage replication technologies
• Senior‑level experience with the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of large‑scale systems, preferably across multiple hardware platforms and data centers
• Strong understanding of high availability concepts with practical experience and implementation of key components in storage environments
• Strong understanding of fundamental hardware concepts: disk, memory, CPU, NIC, HBA, firmware, RAID, performance concepts (I/O, paging, swapping, system calls), iSCSI, Fiber Channel, Ethernet
• Strong understanding of essential TCP/IP concepts: TCP, UDP, ICMP, SMTP, SNMP, LDAP, DNS, NTP, etc.
• Experience connecting storage arrays to Hypervisor Technologies (NUTANIX, VMWARE VCF, OpenStack)
• Understanding of security best practices and federal hardening requirements (FISMA, STIG, etc.)
• Proficient written and oral communication skills
• Strong collaborative attitude and ability to work in a team environment
• Ability to take direction

Salary: $190,000 - $200,000 annually
