Job summary

Nuro is seeking a Safety Systems Engineer in Mountain View, CA to own system-level safety architectures for Autonomy Hardware and Firmware, aligning with ISO 26262 and related standards. You will decompose safety goals into FSC and TSC, define SOTIF targets, and partner with controls, embedded SW, and HW teams.

You will analyze safety analyses, support verification in SIL/HIL, review test plans, and communicate technical risk and residual risk clearly.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience in systems engineering and automotive functional safety (ISO 26262) including requirements generation.
• 3+ years of experience in system architecture for safety-critical systems.
• 3+ years of experience working on fault management or diagnostics systems for automotive applications.
• Ability to read code in C and write code in Python / MATLAB.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Responsibilities

• Drive the system-level safety architecture and requirements for Autonomy Hardware and Firmware, ensuring compliance with automotive safety standards (ISO 26262, ISO 21448).
• Decompose vehicle-level Safety Goals into a cohesive FSC and refine it into a detailed TSC with safety mechanisms and fault strategies.
• Develop the system-level SOTIF specification for Autonomy Hardware and Firmware, defining performance targets and acceptance criteria for safety-critical systems.
• Lead and review safety analyses (HARA, FMEA, FTA, DFA) to identify risks and derive safety requirements.
• Collaborate with controls, embedded software, and hardware teams and external partners to review and recommend changes to requirements and test plans.
• Support verification and validation by reviewing tests and implementing test cases on SIL/HIL environments.
• Analyze test data from simulation, HIL/SIL, and on-road testing to validate safety measures and residual risks.
• Maintain sections of the Safety Case related to platform systems, focusing on residual risk assessment and clear argumentation.

About The Work

• Drive the system-level safety architecture and requirements for the Autonomy Hardware and Firmware of the Nuro Driver, ensuring compliance with automotive safety standards such as ISO 26262 and ISO 21448.
• Decompose vehicle-level Safety Goals into a cohesive Functional Safety Concept (FSC) and refine it into a detailed Technical Safety Concept (TSC), defining system-level safety mechanisms, fault detection and reaction strategies, and safe states.
• Develop the system-level SOTIF specification for the Autonomy Hardware and Firmware of the Nuro Driver, defining performance targets and acceptance criteria for safety-critical systems like Autonomy Sensors and Compute.
• Lead, perform, and review system-level safety analyses, including Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA) to identify risks and derive safety requirements.
• Work closely with controls, embedded SW, and HW teams and external partners to review and recommend changes to existing requirements and test plans.
• Support the verification and validation efforts by reviewing and suggesting additional tests and implementing test cases on SIL/HIL environments.
• Analyze and interpret test data from simulation, HIL/SIL, and on-road vehicle testing to validate the effectiveness of safety mechanisms and identify residual risks.
• Support and maintain sections of the overall Safety Case pertaining to platform systems utilizing structures like GSN and focusing on residual risk assessment and clear argumentation.

About You

• Hands on experience in systems engineering and automotive functional safety (ISO 26262) including requirements generation.
• 3+ years of experience in system architecture for safety critical systems.
• 3+ years of experience working on fault management or diagnostics systems for automotive applications.
• Ability to read code in C and write code in Python / MATLAB.
• Strong communication skills - both verbal and written.

Bonus Points

• AV or ADAS background.
• Familiarity with other safety standards such as STPA, ISO-21448.
• Experience developing and articulating a Safety Case based on UL4600.
• Experience testing in HIL environments or on road testing.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $132,300 and $291,150 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
