Job Description

Datavant is a data platform company and the world's leader in health data exchange. Our vision is that every healthcare decision is powered by the right data, at the right time, in the right format.

Our platform is powered by the largest, most diverse health data network in the U.S., enabling data to be secure, accessible, and usable to inform better health decisions. Datavant is trusted by the world's leading life sciences companies, government agencies, and healthcare providers.

By joining Datavant, you're joining a high-performing, values-driven team. Together, we tackle some of healthcare's most complex problems with innovative solutions. Our team members bring diverse professional, educational, and life experiences to realize our bold healthcare vision.

As a Senior/Staff Engineer on the Provider engineering team, you will solve impactful problems affecting patients and providers by building large-scale distributed systems. We value talent and problem-solving skills over familiarity with our current tech stack. You will be hands-on, involved in system architecture and design, and help grow team capabilities. You will start meaningful work immediately and have opportunities for career advancement.

What You Will Bring:

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven record of building and evolving complex systems, services, APIs, applications, and data pipelines.

  • Experience owning production systems at scale, including refactoring architecture based on real-world usage.

  • Deep expertise in your stack and adaptability to learn new tools and frameworks as needed.

  • A product mindset — focusing on delivering value through usable, testable features rather than technical perfection.

  • Curiosity and ownership — enjoying tackling ambiguity and understanding complex health-tech and legal-tech systems.

  • Commitment to mission and ethics — caring about building systems that serve patients, providers, and stakeholders with timely, accurate data.

The Impact You Will Make:

  • Lead design and development of mission-critical systems powering SmartRequest, including billing, document pipelines, metadata indexing, patient search, and AI summarization.

  • Mentor and collaborate with engineers, guiding technical decisions and fostering a culture of curiosity and ownership.

  • Drive architecture of a new SaaS product transforming a $205M services business into a scalable platform for attorneys, insurers, and government clients.

  • Balance pragmatism and ambition by delivering impactful features while building a modular foundation for future growth.

  • Contribute across the stack, including backend APIs, health data integrations (FHIR, CCDA, EHRs), frontend, and record viewers.

  • Explore and deploy new technologies like LLMs for summarization, FHIR search, automated PDF parsing, and real-time pricing engines.

  • Contribute to our tech blog and share knowledge with the community.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, fostering a high-performance culture where all employees belong and thrive. We are an Equal Employment Opportunity employer, considering all qualified applicants regardless of race, gender, veteran status, or other protected classes.

The estimated total cash compensation range for this role is $140,000—$300,000 USD.

Our post-offer health screenings and vaccination requirements are in place to ensure safety. Exemptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This role is not eligible for employment sponsorship.

We are dedicated to a discrimination-free workplace and provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. For accommodations, contact peopleteam@datavant.com.
