Job summary

Gusto seeks a Senior Staff Software Engineer and Tech Lead to drive the technical direction of the internal Commerce Platform. You will own architecture for catalog, pricing, and subscriptions, partnering with product, data science, and engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliable systems powering 500,000+ small businesses nationwide.

You will mentor engineers, guide end-to-end delivery, and foster AI-enabled development, with a focus on SLOs and observability.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with at least 2 years in a tech lead or staff engineer role.
• Mastery in at least one programming language (Ruby, Java, Python, or Go).
• Experience building and operating large-scale backend platform systems in commerce/billing/subscription domains.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, API design, and SLOs in production.
• Proven ability to work with AI tools in day-to-day engineering and a growth mindset.
• Proven track record leading cross-functional initiatives and aligning stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and architecture for the Commerce Platform, including product catalog, promotion engine, and subscription systems.
• Partner with product management and cross-functional teams to define the platform roadmap and drive adoption.
• Drive end-to-end delivery of complex projects from requirements gathering through rollout and iteration.
• Mentor engineers through reviews and hands-on coaching to foster craftsmanship and improvement.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate velocity and establish AI-assisted development practices.
• Own platform observability, reliability, and performance, defining SLOs and leading incident response.
