Staff Full Stack Engineer (AI-Augmented)
Medici Land Governance (MLG) | Hybrid
This is a hands-on Staff Engineer role for a high-output software engineer who uses modern AI development tools as a force multiplier. It is not an ML research role.
About the Role
MLG is building mission-critical e-governance software for public records, land administration, and property workflows. We are looking for a Staff Full Stack Engineer who can quickly understand an existing production platform, make sound technical decisions, and independently drive important work from problem definition through deployment.
You will serve as an anchor engineer for a growing team: highly hands-on, comfortable operating across the stack, and senior enough to improve patterns, review designs, mentor other engineers, and help new team members become productive quickly. The immediate priority is execution-features, integrations, defects, maintenance, and production problem-solving-while also improving the architecture as the platform scales.
What You'll Do
- Own complex features and technical problems end-to-end across backend services, APIs, data stores, and React applications.
- Work primarily in Python, with Node.js / TypeScript across backend and application services, and React / TypeScript on the frontend.
- Design and evolve service-oriented systems toward well-bounded microservices where splitting services creates clear value.
- Build and operate event-driven systems using Kafka for service-to-service communication and asynchronous processing patterns.
- Apply strong distributed-systems, API-design, database, and domain-driven-design principles to production software.
- Troubleshoot defects and production issues across applications, APIs, databases, queues, containers, and cloud services.
- Contribute to integrations, maintenance work, customer-driven enhancements, and contract deliverables while learning the domain deeply.
- Participate in architecture and design reviews, identify systemic risks, and recommend pragmatic improvements to reliability, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, establish reusable engineering patterns, and help additional engineers onboard into the stack.
- Use AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, LLMs, and coding agents to accelerate implementation, debugging, testing, documentation, and codebase understanding without sacrificing engineering judgment or quality.
- Work effectively with product, design, engineering leadership, and domain experts to translate government and customer requirements into durable software.
Core Technical Environment
- Backend: Python (primary), Node.js / TypeScript (secondary), with a small amount of Java for legacy integrations.
- Architecture: service-oriented architecture moving toward microservices; event-driven design; domain-driven design.
- Messaging and async processing: Kafka; Celery or comparable task-processing patterns.
- Cloud and deployment: Google Cloud Platform, Docker, Kubernetes; Linux-based development environments.
- Data: relational databases, strong data modeling, APIs, and production data troubleshooting.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with clear Staff-level scope and ownership of complex production systems.
- Strong working experience with Node.js / TypeScript and modern React / TypeScript applications.
- Hands-on production experience with Kafka and event-driven architecture, including practical understanding of producers/consumers, partitioning, consumer groups, delivery semantics, retries, and failure handling.
- Strong distributed-systems and system-design fundamentals, including scale, reliability, fault tolerance, API design, and data modeling.
- Experience with service-oriented or microservice architectures and the judgment to choose appropriate service boundaries.
- Comfort with Docker, Kubernetes, cloud deployments, containers, pods, logs, and production troubleshooting. You do not need to be a DevOps specialist.
- Strong testing and delivery discipline across unit, integration, end-to-end testing, and CI/CD.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in ambiguous problem spaces, ask the right questions, and keep moving without requiring constant direction.
- Strong technical communication, design-review, mentorship, and engineering-standard-setting skills.
- Ability to maintain meaningful overlap with U.S. business hours for daily collaboration, standups, and team communication.
Nice to Have
- Practical experience integrating LLM APIs into production applications, including tool/function calling, streaming responses, guardrails, or evaluation.
- RAG, embeddings, vector search, or agentic / multi-step LLM workflows.
- GCP depth, Terraform, observability, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, or Datadog.
- Elasticsearch / OpenSearch and search-oriented application development.
- Experience with regulated, government, B2G, or compliance-sensitive systems such as SOC 2 environments.
- Experience with blockchain / EVM systems, digital identity, biometrics, or verification products.
How You'll Succeed
You keep work moving. You can take a defined problem through the stack, investigate production issues when needed, and proactively pick up the next useful defect, improvement, or feature. You combine autonomy and urgency with strong collaboration and sound technical judgment.
