Job summary

Realtor.com is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to drive technical leadership within Avail’s engineering teams in Austin. You’ll architect scalable full‑stack applications, mentor engineers, and steer the technical direction across multiple squads to solve key customer challenges.

You will lead complex projects, collaborate with Product and Design, influence roadmaps, and help shape scalable, high‑quality software across web, mobile, and backend systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in a senior/staff role.
• Expertise in designing and building full stack applications.
• Strong programming skills in Ruby on Rails.

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you will play a critical role in driving technical leadership within the engineering team. You will be responsible for leading complex, high‑impact projects and guiding the technical direction of the team. As an expert in your field, you will provide mentorship and ensure technical excellence. This is a hands‑on role where you will architect and develop scalable full‑stack applications, influence technical decisions, and solve some of our most challenging engineering problems.

In this role, you will be responsible for advancing our Avail renter technology, tools, and data to solve key customer pain points. You will also set technical direction across multiple teams as we shape our core technology to best serve our business and customers. • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and senior engineers, helping to level up the team's skill set.
• Drive best practices in code quality, testing, and maintainability to ensure long‑term sustainability.
• Conduct code reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of development processes.
• Influence and contribute to the engineering roadmap by identifying technology gaps, scaling challenges, and potential areas of improvement.
• Research and evaluate new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance the team's efficiency and scalability.
• Act as a technical expert, providing guidance in troubleshooting and debugging complex issues in production.
• Participate in recruitment, interviews, and onboarding to help grow the engineering team.

What you’ll bring
