Job description

Fetal Surgery is looking for an accomplished and experienced fetal surgery researcher to support the research enterprise of the incoming Chief of Fetal Surgery's research program.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct Research/Lab Administration: Initiates, directs and executes scientific research pertaining to a specific field of study. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to solve problems. Works on complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of various factors, applying expertise and broad knowledge of principles, theories, and standard protocols. Creates formal networks with key decision makers. Uses professional concepts in accordance with objectives to solve complex problems creatively and effectively. Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria. Responsible for lab administration (IRB/IACUC/biosafety). May oversee divisional or institutional core facilities, managing and providing training for instrumentation. Researches and improves current methods, evaluates innovative techniques. Designs and performs experiments and records data according to protocol. Independently reproduces, evaluates, and improves techniques currently used. Adapts new methods to existing procedures and modifies current experiments through scientific knowledge and intuition.
  • Publish: Drafts, writes and edits scientific reports, papers, journal articles and abstracts. Presents at local, national and international scientific meetings. Consistently partners with the PI to review papers for journals. Achieves at least one first-author paper and operates as the lab leader. Has multiple first or co-senior author papers and co-authorships. Demonstrates continued productivity with multiple publications. Highlights impact of papers on field.
  • Grant Management/Financial Management: Leads and increases contribution to grant writing and applications. Serves as Co-Investigator on grants. Assists in preparing, writing, and maintaining fiscal budgets. Monitors expenditures and prepares capital expenditure requests. Prepares, approves, and initiates check requests; tracks funding, maintains accurate balances, and resolves discrepancies.
  • Leadership: Supervises junior lab members and trainees and may have direct reports. Serves as contact for resolution of complex issues, providing education, guidance and direction. Provides input on hiring decisions, professional development and performance management. Leads research programs or teams within a lab and serves as leader of divisional cores. Interfaces with various departments and serves as expert. Initiates and leads teaching and lectures. Advises the PI and other stakeholders.
  • Teamwork: Trains and supervises laboratory personnel as appropriate. Maintains an integral role in laboratory meetings, presentations and publications. Presents information on research and laboratory work at meetings, journal clubs and seminars. Demonstrates attendance, punctuality, independent work and initiative.
  • Research Standards: Maintains accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments. Develops, sets up and verifies new procedures. Standardizes and establishes new published procedures; evaluates innovative techniques. Designs new assays and protocols. Discusses insights with the Director and provides recommendations. Troubleshoots and corrects erroneous results. Maintains and repairs equipment; monitors proper use. Conducts regular quality and reproducibility checks to ensure optimal accuracy.
