Job summary

Cenovus Energy seeks a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer to lead the US region's Process Safety competency, aligning with Cenovus Risk Methodology and regulatory standards. This role requires deep expertise in HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, PHA standards, and RMP compliance across U.S.

refineries and collaboration with Canadian counterparts. The candidate will mentor engineers, drive risk training, oversee safety studies, and lead assurance audits within the PSM space while integrating

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 16+ years in Process Safety roles; 10+ years in Oil & Gas/Petrochemicals preferred.
  • Experience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs; LOPA analyses.
  • Experience with API, NFPA, CCPS codes, and US regulations; RMP familiarity.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Process Safety across US Refineries, including methodology development and regulatory interpretation.
  • Develop and train Process Safety Engineers in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID).
  • Direct third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis) coordination and QA/QC of deliverables.
  • Drive audits and ensure PSM program compliance across projects.

Worker Type: EmployeeJob Post End Date: 09/26/2026About this opportunity:Cenovus Energy is now hiring for a Senior Staff Process and Technical Safety Engineer who will be accountable for the overall implementation and application of Process Safety as a competency within the US Refineries & for supporting policy development/application beyond the US. This role will serve as the US Region's leading SME and thought leader in the field of Process Safety; will also play a dual role in leading the company's overall PSM expertise with Canadian counterpart(s).What you’ll do:Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:Lead Process Safety as a competency across the US Refineries—owning methodology development, regulatory and code interpretation, and industry policy representationBuild and develop competent, capable Process Safety Engineers trained in Cenovus Risk Methodology (HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, etc.)Design, deliver, and maintain a comprehensive risk-training suite for site personnel, including QA/QC of site deliverables and the ongoing development of new team membersChampion and safeguard key risk standards across the organization (PHA standard, RMP compliance, etc.)Directly conduct/coordinate centrally managed third-party studies (Facility Siting, Fire Hazard Analysis, etc.)Drive and support assurance audits within the PSM spaceWho you are:Legally authorized to work in the USBachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline required16+ years working directly in a Process Safety role or closely related discipline required; 10+ years within Oil and Gas/Petrochemicals considered an asset; Functional Safety Engineer Certification considered an assetExperience leading multiple complex unit HAZOPs and MOCs for a chemical/oil and gas operator, and conducting LOPA analyses with translation into SIL requirements requiredExperience in process safety information auditing or RAGAGEP verification requiredExperience in consequence modelling required (experience with PHAST software considered an asset)Familiarity with API, NFPA, and CCPS codes & US regulations required.
