Klover, a leading fintech platform, is seeking a backend engineer in Chicago to build and scale production-grade microservices powering real-time payments and financial tools.

You will collaborate across backend, mobile, and product teams, design secure APIs to fintech partners, and drive high-quality, maintainable code with a focus on reliability, security, and performance in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building backend services in production.
• Experience in fintech/payments or banking systems.
• Familiarity with SOC2, PCI DSS, GDPR.
• Design transactional/event-driven systems for payments or ledgers.
• Experience with microservice/SOA and cloud environments.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve microservices handling high‑volume financial data.
• Design APIs securely connecting to payment processors, banks, and fintech partners.
• Write maintainable, testable, readable code.

Klover's engineering team powers one of the fastest-growing fintech platforms in the U.S., supporting over one million active users each month. Our systems process and move more than $1.5 billion annually, enabling real‑time access to financial tools, rewards, and services that help people improve their day‑to‑day lives. As part of this team, you'll help design, build, and scale the systems that underpin Klover's core products and platform. You'll work on high‑impact, production‑grade systems that prioritize reliability, security, and performance, and that integrate with a broad ecosystem of internal and external services. The work you do will directly shape how users interact with Klover's products, access their money, and experience transparent, low‑fee financial services.

Location & Schedule

Chicago, IL: 4 days in‑office; 1 day remote (Hybrid Schedule)

Essential Qualifications

• Build and scale backend systems that support financial products and real‑time payments
• Work in environments where data integrity, security, and performance are critical
• Develop microservices using Rust and Go
• Willingness to learn and teach in a collaborative environment
• Leverage and develop using AI tools
• Participate in an open feedback environment

Day‑To‑Day Responsibilities

• Build and evolve microservices that handle high‑volume financial and transactional data
• Design and implement APIs that securely connect to third‑party payment processors, banks, and fintech partners
• Write thoughtful, quality code that is readable, testable, and easily maintainable
• Develop data‑driven services that power account management, transaction history, and financial insights
• Strive for excellent development practices and careful code architecture that is built around rapid releases
• Work cross‑functionally with backend, mobile, and product teams to consistently release high‑quality, customer‑focused financial features
• Adhere to, and improve upon, our agile process through requirement documents, sprint retrospectives, and other regular cadence meetings

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building backend services in production environments
• Experience in the financial technology, payments, or banking systems industry
• Familiarity with compliance, security, and data privacy standards (SOC2, PCIDSS, GDPR)
• Experience designing transactional and event‑driven systems for payments, reconciliation systems, or ledger‑like applications
• Familiarity with microservice or Service‑oriented Architecture
• Experience using gRPC, protobuf, or GraphQL
• Expert knowledge of SQL and experience designing data models for financial data integrity
• Experience with message queues or event streams (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Experience with cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
