Job summary

HeartFlow, Inc. seeks Senior or Staff Software Engineer to design, build, and operate backend services powering the HeartFlow clinical platform.

You will move patient imaging data through our AI analysis pipeline and deliver results to clinicians worldwide. You will own end-to-end features, contribute to security and regulatory compliance, mentor teammates, and collaborate with Product, Clinical, Operations, and Regulatory.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience for the Senior level; 10+ years, including leadership beyond a single team, for the Staff level.
• Strong backend programming skills in Python or Java with OOP, data modeling, concurrency, and API design.
• Hands-on experience building and operating services on AWS and working with SQL and NoSQL data stores.
• Demonstrated experience designing, shipping, and operating production services in distributed or microservices architectures.
• Ownership of a meaningful service end-to-end including reliability and production performance.
• Engineering craftsmanship: automated testing, code reviews, and debugging; explain why code is correct.
• Experience with Agile development methodologies and project management tools.
• Security knowledge: web security and OWASP best practices.
• Platform experience: AWS services, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK), CI/CD, observability.
• Ability to communicate clearly about technical work to non-engineering stakeholders.
• Collaborative, fast-paced environment with cross-team interaction.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, and operate backend services and APIs for the HeartFlow clinical platform, owning work from design through production monitoring.
• Technical Design: translate requirements into designs; review docs; reason about trade-offs among correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code and participate in code reviews for correctness and documentation in regulated environments.
• Build and improve services and data pipelines moving patient imaging data and analyses securely at scale.
• Implement secure-by-default patterns for authentication, authorization, access control, and data integrity.
• Own reliability and performance: instrument, monitor, and respond to production issues; participate in on-call.
• Contribute to CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and developer tooling to accelerate delivery.
• Produce design, verification, and traceability docs for FDA-regulated medical software and HIPAA compliance.
• Mentor engineers, review code, pair programming, and onboarding new team members.
• AI-Assisted Engineering: judicious use of AI coding tools with verification steps.
• Partner with Product, Clinical, Operations, and Regulatory to scope work and communicate trade-offs to non-engineers.
• Technical Leadership (Staff): lead multi-service initiatives across teams and drive milestones to production.
• Risk and Standards (Staff): identify risks, propose mitigations, and evolve engineering best practices.
