Job summary

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) seeks applicants for a full-time Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel to develop and execute civil rights litigation with a focus on voting rights and democratic processes.

The attorney will work from our Newark office with a hybrid schedule, requiring in-office presence on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and may handle other civil liberties issues as needed.

Qualifications

• Admitted to practice law in New Jersey; must obtain NJ license within 12 months of joining.
• At least four years of litigation experience; preference for voting rights and democracy experience.
• Senior Staff Attorney or Senior Counsel titles require substantial seniority and subject matter expertise.

Responsibilities

• Identify opportunities to expand voting rights using NJVEA tools and evaluate litigation strategies.
• Collaborate across departments on integrated advocacy campaigns for voting rights and democracy issues.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, conduct discovery, and manage appeals as needed.
• Engage in public speaking and represent ACLU-NJ positions to diverse audiences, including media.
• Provide oversight and support for litigation or advocacy handled by law firms or students.
• Ensure cases and projects align with organizational priorities and center racial justice.
