Job summary

Child Mind Institute in New York, NY is seeking a Senior Sponsored Projects Accountant to support grant accounting, financial reporting, compliance and audits within the Finance team.

The role manages a portfolio of government and private grants, ensuring revenue recognition, funding drawdowns, and timely invoicing. In-office presence is required at least four days per week at our NYC headquarters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • 4 years of progressive experience in grant accounting with a emphasis on grant accounting, nonprofit accounting, and regulatory compliance in a nonprofit, healthcare, higher education, or public sector environment, or public accounting experience serving these sectors, including supporting Uniform Guidance Audits.
  • Solid understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including grants management, donor-restricted revenue and reporting, audit preparation, and City of New York, State, or Federal funding compliance requirements.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and data analysis techniques.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, grant invoices, and financial reports.
  • Experience with Sage Intacct, Workday, or similar ERP/financial systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the financial administration of an assigned portfolio of sponsored awards, including budget monitoring, forecasting, invoicing, reporting, and award closeout.
  • Review expenditures for allowability, allocability, and reasonableness in accordance with Uniform Guidance and sponsor requirements.
  • Monitor spending against approved budgets and communicate financial risks or variances to program and finance leadership.
  • Manage monthly grant reconciliations to the general ledger and prepare monthly journal entries, ensure accurate posting of expenses, and monitor for unallowable costs. Prepare and process correcting journal entries, including payroll allocation adjustments.
  • Support cash flow tracking, aging reports, and reconciliation of revenue recognition vs. receipts.
  • Prepare and submit grant invoices; track payments and follow up on outstanding receivables.
  • Strengthen internal controls, documentation, and audit readiness across the grant's portfolio
  • Assist with Uniform Guidance Single Audit, financial audits, and funder desk audits.
  • Provide guidance on grant accounting, compliance requirements, and financial reporting and respond to internal inquiries related to revenue release, account activity, and financial policy questions.
  • Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

As part of the Finance team, you will report to the Director, Sponsored Programs Operations. As the Senior Sponsored Projects Accountant you will play a key role supporting CMI's grant accounting, financial reporting, compliance and audit functions. As part of the Finance team, reporting to the Director of Sponsored Program Operations (DSPO), you will be responsible for managing a complex portfolio of government (City, State, and Federal) and private grants. You will also interact with internal and external stakeholders and ensure accurate revenue recognition, funding drawdowns, financial reporting, audit readiness, grant compliance, and invoice processing.

This is an exempt, full-time, position and requires a minimum of four (4) days per week in the office, on a schedule determined by your supervisor in our NYC headquarters office. The in-office requirement and schedule are subject to change based on the needs of the program and the organization.

You Will
