How You'll Contribute

The Advancement team identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals as well as foundation, government and corporate partners who invest in the Society to drive impact through science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling. The team collaborates across the Society to build transformative and impact-driven strategic partnerships. The team also produces global events that deepen connections and leverage the Society's power to convene, and directs robust annual, major and planned giving programs empowering the Society with a broad base of public support.

Working within the dynamic and collaborative Advancement Operations team and reporting to the Director, Advancement Data and Systems, the Senior Specialist, Advancement Data and Systems is responsible for all aspects of data queries, segmentation, quality control, and data output as well as data management utilizing the highest quality of data standards and practices to support philanthropic revenue.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Oversee implementation of data select, query, and segmentation requests, including quality control, output and timely delivery of all mail plans, event counts, event lists, requests from external vendors and campaign mail files. (70%)

Maintain all Advancement systems in a manner that ensures the integrity of the data and maximizes fundraising success. (20%)
  • Manage data, including exporting/importing, validation, and routine analysis.
  • Update duplicates, deceased or inactive constituents, bad addresses and donor solicitation preferences.
  • Oversee and run ongoing data update and hygiene processes, including membership expire updates and giving level and recurring gift coding updates.
  • Follow NGS data management processes to ensure compliance with data privacy, protection, and consent requirements.


Troubleshoot issues with inconsistent data collection or entry procedures. (5%)

Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency for ongoing data processing tasks. (5%)

What You'll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor's degree preferred

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

4+ years as a database professional, including experience with a database(s) supporting fundraising and marketing programs.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills
  • Proficiency with major nonprofit database, CRM, and eCRM systems such as Blackbaud Raiser's Edge/NXT and Engaging Networks;
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills including formulas, sorting, filtering.
  • Experience supporting the data needs of mature nonprofit fundraising programs, including direct response marketing;
  • Strong quality control skills, including the ability to research, understand and "tell the story" of data queries and counts;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capacity with the ability to spot issues within data and systems and proactively fix them or identify possible solutions;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines;
  • Motivated and dependable, ability to prioritize workload, manage time efficiently, consistently meet required deadlines.


Desired Qualifications
  • Raiser's Edge NXT Fundamentals Certification from Blackbaud
  • Experience with Omatic tools

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $76,000 - $80,000

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
