Job summary

Amazon Leo seeks a qualified engineer to define, collect, and analyze radiation data to qualify components for space applications. You will assess system-level impacts of radiation events and qualify electronic components like microcontrollers, memory, FPGAs, and power management hardware.

You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to guide designers on selecting radiation-tolerant components and develop tools for organizing on-orbit event data and test results.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in spaceflight avionics development, parts selection, and radiation test.
  • 3+ years of system design and component qualification experience with radiation environments and radiation tolerant hardware.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the impact of SEE and TID effects on electronic systems.
  • Experience with radiation environment modeling tools such as IRENE, SPENVIS, SIRE2, OMERE, OLTARIS, CREME96, SAPPHIRE, ESP, or PSYCHIC.

Responsibilities

  • Define, collect, and analyze TID, heavy ion, and proton testing data to qualify components against space radiation.
  • Help determine system-level impact of radiation-induced failures.
  • Qualifier a wide range of electronic components including microcontrollers, memory devices, FPGAs, and power management hardware.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to select radiation-tolerant components and proper utilization.

Export Control Requirement:

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
  • Candidate will define, collect, and analyze TID, heavy ion, and proton testing data to qualify components against space radiation and help build a database of electronic component test data
  • Candidate will help to determine system-level impact of radiation-induced failures
  • Candidate will be responsible for the qualification of a wide range of electronic components including microcontrollers, memory devices, FPGAs, and power management hardware
  • Will work with an interdisciplinary team to offer guidance to electrical design engineers on the selection and proper utilization of radiation sensitive components
  • Lead root-cause analysis of on-orbit radiation events. Develop tools and dashboards to organize and visualize on-orbit events.
  • Develop processes for managing component and satellite hardware test results and documentation
  • Develop testing and reporting standards for component and flight PCBA radiation tests
  • Work with supply chain and component reliability teams to refine preferred components across programs
  • Review PCN changes to ensure maintenance of radiation qualification status

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or experience working in electrical engineering field
  • 3+ years of experience in spaceflight avionics development, parts selection, and radiation test
  • 3+ years System design and component qualification experience with radiation environments and radiation tolerant hardware
  • Demonstrated understanding of the impact of SEE and TID effects on electronic systems.
  • Experience with one or more standard radiation environment modeling tools, including but not limited to IRENE, OMERE, SIRE2, SPENVIS, OLTARIS, CREME96, SAPPHIRE, ESP, or PSYCHIC.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or above in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field
  • Experience in component selection and understanding of component reliability
  • Experience with one or more radiation transport codes, including but not limited to NOVICE, FASTRAD, SHIELDOSE2, GEANT4, or MCNP.
  • Experience with NASA, Defense or Commercial Space programs.
  • Knowledge of any of the following: Python, LabView, AI-vibe coding.
  • Experience collaborating with reliability team with vehicle-level reliability models.
  • Knowledge of AWS tools such as S3 and DynamoDB.
  • Proficiency with hardware blueprints/schematics and circuit functions based on designs.
  • Proficiency with avionics hardware spanning integrated circuits, PCBA boards, sensors/transducers, functional troubleshooting, and defect detection
