Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a Principal Engineer for Opto-Mechanical Systems to lead precision gimbal and mechanism design for the TeraWave constellation. You will guide cross-functional teams on mechanical architectures, analyze performance, and ensure space qualification compliance for reliable orbital operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field.
• 8+ years designing precision space mechanisms and gimbals.
• Experience with space environment design and testing.
• Proficient in 3D CAD and FEA tools.
• Knowledge of GD&T, tolerances, and interfaces.
• Understanding of DFM/DFA for manufacturability.

Responsibilities

• Lead architectural design of precision gimbal assemblies for space optical terminals.
• Define performance requirements, budgets, and margins across domains.
• Drive trade studies on mass, stiffness, and pointing accuracy for lifetime.
• Lead qualification programs including vibration, shock, and thermal tests.
• Develop design standards, workflows, and documentation for hardware builds.
• Guide engineering teams on integration, harness routing, and interfaces.
• Mentor junior engineers in mechanisms design and space qualification.
• Support production transitions with manufacturability improvements.
• Collaborate on tooling, supplier development, and test campaigns.
