Job summary

General Atomics is seeking a senior-level engineer to lead development of space-based optical communication networks within GA-EMS. You will design payloads, systems, and networks, interacting with senior leadership and customers including the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community.

This role requires expert understanding of satellite networks, RF/optical technologies, and space environment considerations, with leadership in planning, research and national presentations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in engineering with extensive experience; 18+ yrs (bachelors), 16+ (masters), or 13+ (PhD).
  • Expert understanding of satellite networks, optical/RF waveforms, free-space optical comms, RF photonics, and satellite comms.
  • Familiar with related networking fields and optical networks.
  • Space-optical communication experience is required.
  • Experience with network architecture definition and implementation.
  • Strong systems engineering principles: synthesis, documentation, communication.
  • Experience with LEO/GEO/MEO, orbital dynamics, and radiation effects on hardware.
  • Knowledge of optical downlink/upink through atmosphere (satellite to air/ground).
  • Strong awareness of US government optical comm standards (SDA/SSC).
  • FEC/ARQ/LDPC; NR-HARQ knowledge desirable; NR 5G LDPC familiarity helpful.
  • Nationally recognized engineer via publications, invited talks, or patents.
  • Proven leadership in solving complex problems and attracting staff/business.
  • Ability to guide complex resolutions; TS clearance preferred; travel as required.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize and articulate innovative resolutions to highly technical problems.
  • Coordinate with senior internal/external personnel on technical matters.
  • Lead planning and oversight for implementation of engineered solutions.
  • Plan for strategic objectives and timetables; anticipate future challenges.
  • Allocate technical resources and staff to achieve objectives.
  • Prepare status reports and ensure safety/compliance.
  • Represent the company nationally through presentations and papers.
  • Mentor staff and transfer knowledge; maintain confidentiality.
  • Observe laws, regulations, and safe operating procedures; perform other duties.
