About Cloudwick
Cloudwick modernizes how government works with data. Our firm belief is that fixing the underlying data is critical to every modernization effort. You have to get the data right first. Our product, Amorphic, provides a complete suite of tools to do exactly that, built by people with deep data and government expertise. We work with state health, education, environmental and public safety agencies on programs where the data has to be right because people depend on what it decides.
Position Overview
You will be the architect of record on a large state health data program. Specialist engineers own each technology stack. You own the architecture, the technical decisions and the design discussions with the customer, in meetings that include the agency's IT leadership, EHR and data vendors, and hospital and local agency partners. You are the person whose architecture the engineers build to. You do not need to be the deepest engineer on every stack.
We are hiring for two programs. Each opening is tied to one program and its location, and the role may support the other program as work requires.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the architecture across concurrent workstreams, with engineering teams building to your design on schedules that do not line up.
- Lead the technical design discussions with the agency and with vendor and hospital counterparts, and hold your position without an executive in the room.
- Own the interface contracts where application, data and exchange boundaries cross teams and organizations.
- Own the data-isolation model and the evidence that it works. One agency or facility seeing another's patient records is a program-ending event.
- Run the technical side of the requirements and acceptance cycle: turn program requests into scoped, buildable designs, and push back where the request and the architecture disagree.
- Provide technical input to estimates, plans and change requests.
What Success Looks Like
- 30 days: you have learned the program's workstreams, the platform and the commitments already made, and met the engineering leads and the agency's technical staff.
- 60 days: you make architectural decisions on your own authority, and design questions come to you.
- 90 days: you are the architecture contact the agency and the vendors deal with directly.
- 6 months: you have taken a major workstream through a milestone the customer accepted, with documented evidence behind the isolation model.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Roughly 8 or more years of experience, including architecture ownership on production systems.
- Large-scale application development: you have designed and run production applications at scale, not only data platforms, and owned the architecture from front end to back end, including APIs, services on containers or serverless, a modern web front end, and the operating model behind it.
- HL7 v2 and FHIR at depth: you have built or debugged real interfaces at the message and resource level, and you know how EHR data is structured.
- The AWS data platform in production: S3, Glue, Athena or Redshift, and Lake Formation, or an equivalent lakehouse, including reporting with row‑level security.
- Architectural ownership across more than one workstream at a time, with engineers building to your design and decisions you had to defend.
- A data‑isolation model you designed where getting it wrong would have had serious consequences, and how you proved it worked.
- Technical design leadership with a public‑sector or healthcare customer, facing the customer's technical team and a vendor's architects in the same meeting.
- Authorized to work in the United States, able to pass a background check, and able to perform all work within the United States. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
We will ask you for a specific example of each of these. No certification is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Migrating data out of a legacy EHR, such as Cerner Millennium (CCL) or InterSystems Caché.
- EMS data and NEMSIS.
- Epic & Cerner integration, including Epic backend services apps.
- State health information exchange frameworks, especially California's Data Exchange Framework.
- AWS CDK and infrastructure as code.
- Amazon QuickSight.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional.
Travel Requirements
This is a hybrid role. The two openings are based in the Sacramento, California area and the Austin, Texas area, with 1 to 2 days a week on site with the client. Travel up to 25% of the time, including trips to the other program's location. All travel expenses will be covered by the company.
Our hiring process:
- A 30-minute conversation with our recruiting team.
- A 45-minute conversation with the hiring manager about architectures you have owned, including an application you designed end to end.
- An architecture working session on a real, sanitized problem from one of these programs.
- Conversations with the delivery leaders and the architecture team you would join.
- References and offer.
We aim to finish the process within three weeks and to tell you where you stand at each step.
