Job summary

Raytheon is seeking a System Safety engineer to develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant safety programs across software and hardware. You will assess risks, collaborate with software and systems teams, and support program management from concept through deployment.

The role requires a STEM background and extensive experience in system safety and software engineering, with DoD/DoD-aligned standards familiarity.

Overview

The System Safety team is dedicated to evaluating and mitigating the safety risks that our products may pose to people, hardware, and the environment. By applying rigorous engineering and management principles, criteria, and techniques, the team ensures that safety is optimized throughout every phase of the system lifecycle. System Safety is an integral part of the design process, functioning as a critical component within the broader systems engineering framework. From concept development to deployment and beyond, we identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement solutions to enhance product safety and reliability for our warfighters.

What You Will Do
  • Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs involving task series 100 (management), 200 (analysis), 300 (evaluation), and 400 (verification).
  • Analyze engineering software and/or firmware in accordance with MIL-STD-882E, JSSSEH, AOP-52, and other relevant standards.
  • Work with software development teams to review and analyze software code.
  • Collaborate with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup through deployment to secure concurrence with software builds.
  • Assist with software and/or firmware analyses.
  • Participate in the execution of the Software System Safety Program.
  • Interface with various stakeholders, including customers, program offices, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Assist with preparation of Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for customer approval.
  • Assist with software safety technical reviews.
  • Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to understand product architecture and design.
  • Prepare internal and customer reports describing analyses relevant to the System Safety program.
  • Interface with other engineering functions such as Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Hardware Engineering.
  • Manage System Safety Working Groups between key Raytheon and customer representatives.
  • Demonstrate ability to work on Special Access Programs.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of five years of prior relevant experience.
  • Experience with System Safety Engineering, System Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, or Safety Engineering in aerospace, automotive, or medical device domains.
  • Experience with risk assessment concepts such as MIL-STD‑882E or DO‑178.
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Active or existing DoD clearance.
  • Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD‑882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, including hardware and software safety tasks.
  • Experience with DoD System Safety Programs (e.g., MIL‑STD‑882/DO‑178).
  • Experience implementing system and software safety in Agile Development environments.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and proposal development.
  • Experience interfacing with Human Systems Integration, including Human Factors Engineering tasks per MIL‑STD‑1472.
  • Experience coordinating with other engineering functions such as Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, and System Safety Working Groups.
