Job DescriptionThe RoleWe're looking for an engineering leader who still ships code.You'll lead multiple teams building the business-critical platforms, integrations, and modernization programs behind how GM sources parts and delivers vehicles. You'll own the technical direction, the delivery, and the results.You'll also change how GM builds software. You'll make AI coding agents a core part of how your teams plan, build, test, and ship, and you'll prove the impact with real metrics.You'll stay hands-on: writing and reviewing code, debugging hard problems, prototyping, and working directly with agents. You'll bring Principal Engineer-level judgment to every design review, and you'll lead by example.About the TeamThe Order Fulfillment Software Factory builds GM's end-to-end software for two value streams:Source to Deliver: purchasing, supplier management, supply chain, and logisticsOrder to Deliver: how GM sells, configures, schedules, and delivers vehicles to dealers and customersWe're driving GM's SaaS First, Cloud First, AI First direction, working alongside Purchasing and Order Fulfillment IT and GM's peer engineering, mainframe, and SAP factories.What You'll DoLead multiple engineering teams across a portfolio of modern platforms, APIs, integrations, and legacy systemsTurn business strategy into roadmaps and KPIs, then deliver themPartner with product, business, architecture, operations, and delivery leaders to translate business needs into scalable engineering solutionsMake the hard architecture calls and set a high bar for quality, security, and reliabilityGet hands-on through code reviews, debugging, technical spikes, and proofs of conceptDrive modernization strategies for legacy applications, including decomposition, platform evolution, integration simplification, and reduction of technical debtRoll out AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) across the SDLC, with guardrails that make agent-written code safe to shipBuild agent tooling such as MCP servers, custom agents, and agent-driven CI/CD for PR review, test generation, and large-scale migrationsMeasure what works with DORA metrics, cycle time, and change-failure rate, and report results to leadershipHire and grow engineers and tech leads who are fast, rigorous, and accountable for everything they mergeCreate a culture of accountability, technical excellence, continuous learning, and customer-focused deliveryOwn production health by leading incident response and driving root causes to durable fixesYour Skills and Abilities (Minimum Qualifications)BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience10+ years of software engineering and people leadership experience, including leading multiple teamsCurrent, hands-on coding proficiency in Java or C++, plus experience with front-end frameworks such as Angular or React1+ year of substantial hands-on use of AI coding agents in production workExperience with distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architecture, and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)Experience modernizing legacy systems while supporting business-critical deliveryExperience establishing and improving engineering standards, development lifecycle practices, and delivery disciplineAbility to lead across ambiguity, influence senior stakeholders, and align technical decisions with business outcomesStrong coaching and mentoring capability, with a track record of raising the technical effectiveness of engineers and managersExcellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to both engineering and business audiencesWhat Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)12+ years of software engineering experience and 7+ years in engineering leadershipExperience leading org-wide adoption of agentic development, with measured gainsExperience building with LLM APIs, MCP, retrieval, and evaluation harnessesExperience with mainframe-connected or deeply integrated enterprise systemsFamiliarity with secure-by-design practices for AI-generated code and automotive standards (ISO 26262, ISO/SAE 21434)Experience leading globally distributed teamsExperience influencing executives in a complex, matrixed organizationGM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
