Intramotev is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Vehicle Controls to own the control system that plans trips for self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles, ensuring safety and execution from server to onboard modules.

You will design, implement, and test the stack across ground and vehicle interfaces, mentor teammates, and coordinate with autonomous capabilities teams in a full-time, in-office role based in St. Louis, MO.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Vehicle Controls to own the control system that plans trips for our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles, keeps them safe, and drives them — from the server-side modules that route and dispatch a trip, through the real-time messaging that carries commands and state between ground and vehicle, to the onboard modules that execute that trip on the vehicle. The code you write runs on real machines moving real freight, on a small team where a senior engineer’s design decisions shape the product.

This role sets the design and quality bar for vehicle-controls software, mentors the engineers on the team, and partners with Perception on autonomous capabilities while coordinating with the Embedded and Applications teams on the interfaces between us. This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You’ll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and engage in occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demonstrations, and customer interactions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design & Architecture: Own the architecture of the vehicle-control system across ground and vehicle — service boundaries, interface specifications, and delivery-guarantee strategy — and author the design decisions other engineers build on.

• Lead System Development: Build and maintain the server-side modules that plan and administer a trip, from request through route, dispatch, progress tracking, and status reporting, alongside the onboard modules that execute that plan safely on the vehicle. Prototype quickly, then harden the pieces that need it into production-quality code in whichever language fits the job.

• Real-Time Messaging: Design and implement the messaging between ground and vehicle with per-message-class delivery guarantees, distinguishing latest-state-wins telemetry from commands and events that must not be lost.

• Data Integrity: Own the data describing track and vehicles and the interfaces that serve it, including the version and integrity checks that keep ground and vehicle deployments in sync.

• Testing & Validation: Set the testing bar for the stack — unit and integration tests before production, field testing and integration on physical rail vehicles, and regression tests that lock in every production fix.

• Lifecycle Support: Debug production issues on fielded vehicles to root cause, and feed what you learn back into the architecture, the tests, and the team’s standards.

• Leadership & Mentoring: Raise the quality bar through design review, code review, and mentorship; decompose ambiguous requirements into concrete tasks for yourself and the engineers alongside you.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Perception on autonomous capabilities, coordinate interfaces with the Embedded and Applications teams, and maintain the documentation and internal knowledge bases that keep those interfaces honest.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $120,000–$140,000 plus equity

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

• At least a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field.
• 5 or more years of experience shipping production software.
• A track record of designing systems other engineers build on — including systems whose components talk to each other over a network, on the ground and on the vehicle — and of raising the quality bar through design review, code review, and mentorship.
• Command of data structures, algorithms, and maintainable system design, with depth in one or more of Python, C, C++, Rust, Go, or MATLAB/Simulink, or a demonstrated ability to ramp into a new systems language quickly.
• Testing discipline — unit and integration coverage in place before code reaches production — together with Git in a collaborative workflow, the Linux command line, and fluent, demonstrated use of AI-assisted development tools with a point of view on where they help and where they do not.
• Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches; open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor.
• Fluent in both written and verbal English.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

• Real-time, embedded, or onboard software, and the constraints of running on a vehicle rather than a server.
• Message-driven or distributed systems and their delivery-guarantee trade-offs — pub/sub, queues, and streams; late, dropped, or out-of-order messages; Redis or ZeroMQ.
• Using a database as a source of truth, and maintaining data integrity in a distributed setting through versioning, checksums, or content hashing.
• Robotics, controls, autonomy, or real-time systems.
• Perception, sensor fusion, localization, or GNSS/INS data.
• Docker and containerized development, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Reading and extending an existing codebase rather than starting from a blank page.
• Experience in directly applicable industry or projects, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, or Unmanned Systems, including working across disciplines with hardware, electrical, and mechanical engineers.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 3 years' related work experience).
