Job summary

OpenAI in San Francisco seeks a senior engineer for the Search Product Infrastructure team. You will design, build, and operate systems that connect models with search at ChatGPT scale, shaping latency, reliability, and throughput.

Collaborate with researchers and partner teams, own projects from design through launch, and evolve the architecture as demand grows. The role offers a hybrid work model and relocation assistance.

Qualifications

• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience in search, information retrieval, ML infrastructure, or high-throughput online systems.
• Strong programming and systems debugging skills.
• Ability to turn ambiguous product or research needs into clear technical plans.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve the services that coordinate search classification, retrieval, ranking, and model inference.
• Improve end-to-end latency, throughput, and infrastructure efficiency.
• Build experimentation tooling and automation for reproducible A/B tests and safe rollouts.
• Own production reliability through observability and incident response.
• Build search APIs and tool interfaces for reliable information retrieval with proper access controls.
