Job summary

IREN is hiring senior software engineers for Platform Engineering. You will own end-to-end system design, interfaces between teams, and cross-cutting improvements across data engineering, automation, developer tooling, AI enablement, and product engineering.

You will mentor peers, review designs, and stay hands-on while raising the bar for the engineering organization. This role emphasizes collaboration across teams, clear contract definitions, and the ability to guide multi-team delivery

Qualifications

Platform Engineering builds what the rest of IREN builds on. We own data engineering, automation, developer tooling, AI enablement, and product engineering, the systems that turn a fleet of data centers and GPU clusters into a platform our customers and our own teams can move quickly on. Much of it is being built now, for the first time, so there is no legacy stack to maintain and no established playbook to follow.

We are hiring senior software engineers across Platform Engineering. This is an individual contributor role. Seniority here is measured by the scope of what you own and by how much better the engineers around you get, not by how many people report to you. At this level you own the design of whole systems, including the parts that cross team boundaries and the parts you will not build yourself.

The part of the role we weight most heavily is what you do for the engineers around you. We expect you to raise the standard of the people you work with, through design review and code review that teach rather than correct, through pairing, and through handing hard problems to engineers who are ready to stretch. We look for evidence of this during the interview, and we continue to assess it after you join.

Because Platform Engineering builds for other teams, the boundaries matter as much as the internals. You will own the interfaces between your systems and everyone else's, negotiate what those contracts guarantee, and manage versioning and compatibility when something has to change. That work is as much communication as design, so we expect you to write clearly and to be comfortable in a room where people disagree. We also expect depth: senior engineers here are the person the company asks about a particular domain, whether that is data engineering, automation, developer tooling, AI enablement, or product engineering. Engineers at every level at IREN stay hands on, senior ones included.

• 6 or more years of professional software engineering experience, including several years operating in production what you built.
• A record of owning system level design rather than components alone. You have been the person accountable for how a whole system fits together.
• Deep experience with distributed systems, including failure modes you have personally debugged rather than only read about.
• Demonstrated coaching. Be ready to name engineers who grew because of how you worked with them, and to say what actually changed.
• Experience owning APIs that other teams depend on, including versioning and breaking change migrations.
• Excellent communication, particularly in writing. You can write a design document another team can act on without a meeting.
• Depth in at least one domain relevant to this team: data engineering, automation, developer tooling, AI enablement, or product engineering.
• Experience leading delivery across more than one team, without formal authority over the people involved.
• Strong fundamentals, and the judgement to recognize when the simple answer is the right one.

Nice to have:

• Experience as a formal tech lead, or in a staff level role.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, containers, and infrastructure as code (AWS, Azure, or GCP; Kubernetes; Terraform).
• Experience with high volume data pipelines, streaming systems, or telemetry and time series data.
• Experience putting machine learning or LLM systems into production.
• Experience working close to physical infrastructure, where the software must account for hardware that fails.

• Own system design from end to end: the problem statement, architecture, interfaces, data model, and rollout, including the parts other engineers will build.
• Coach and develop the engineers around you. Give review that teaches, pair on hard problems, and hand over work that stretches people rather than keeping it because you would finish it faster.
• Own the API contracts between your systems and other teams: negotiate what they guarantee, version them, and manage the migration when they change.
• Set technical direction for your area, and write it down so other teams can build against it without needing a meeting first.
• Break large, ambiguous problems into work that a team can sequence, estimate, and deliver.
• Lead delivery across team boundaries, including the coordination and follow up that this actually requires.
• Stay hands on. Write and review code, and carry the pager for what you own.
• Own operations for your systems: monitoring, on-call, incident response, and the follow up that stops the same incident recurring.
• Be the person the company can ask about your domain, and make what you know available to others rather than holding it.
• Raise the standard through the systems around the code: CI/CD, observability, testing practice, and documentation.

Compensation

• The expected base salary for this role USD $152,000 – $228,000/annum.
  • Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and market data for the region.
• Total Compensation package may be inclusive of annual incentive bonus, equity (long-term incentive).
• Relocation or Living-out-allowance / per diem (as appliable and based on successful candidate circumstances)
