Job summary

DigitalOcean is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Network Datapath to evolve the software powering high-performance networking across our cloud. You will work at the intersection of networking, OS, and distributed systems to deliver scalable datapath technologies with high throughput and low latency.

The role focuses on software around the datapath, including packet processing, routing, forwarding, and hardware integration.

Qualifications

• Strong experience designing and developing production software in C, C++, or Go.
• Strong understanding of networking and packet processing.
• Experience developing software for Linux-based networking systems.
• Solid understanding of networking concepts: TCP/IP, routing, VLANs, VXLAN, BGP, ECMP, NAT, load balancing, and network virtualization.
• Experience debugging and optimizing performance-sensitive systems.
• Understanding of Linux networking internals: kernel networking stack, namespaces, sockets, queues, interrupts, NIC drivers.
• Experience with high-performance networking technologies: DPDK, XDP, eBPF, AF_XDP, SR-IOV.
• Experience with multithreaded and concurrent software.
• Strong understanding of performance analysis, profiling, benchmarking, and troubleshooting.
• Ability to drive projects from design to production.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize high-performance network datapath software for cloud infrastructure.
• Build and improve packet-processing and forwarding systems for throughput and low latency.
• Develop networking functionality across host, kernel, user space, and hardware datapath.
• Work with Linux networking technologies (eBPF, XDP, DPDK, AF_XDP, SR-IOV).
• Analyze packet paths to remove bottlenecks and improve performance.
• Develop routing, filtering, tunneling, load balancing, and network virtualization features.
• Create datapath observability, telemetry, and performance monitoring.
• Design with DPUs, SmartNICs, programmable NICs, and hardware acceleration in mind.
• Develop automated tests and benchmarking for datapath correctness.
