Job summary

Planet is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead optimization initiatives for the world’s largest Earth observation constellation. You will own problems end to end, design robust software, and collaborate with spacecraft, imaging, and product teams to meet customer commitments.

The role is hybrid and based in San Francisco, requiring 3 days in the office. You will mentor engineers, analyze data, and drive measurable improvements in fleet performance and SLAs.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, CS, or related field.
• Strong Python proficiency and systems design experience.
• Ability to turn ambiguous problems into measurable outcomes.
• Data-driven approach with large datasets.
• Effective written and verbal communication and mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

• Own optimization initiatives end to end from problem framing to production.
• Design, develop, and maintain mission-critical software for satellite constellations.
• Define concepts of operations for current and future missions in collaboration with sensor and systems teams.
• Analyze operational data to surface inefficiencies and drive improvements.
• Serve as a technical advisor and mentor to engineers on the team.
• Represent the team’s position with engineering, operations, and product stakeholders.
