At the Merchant Engineering team, we develop products that are easy for developers to integrate, enabling merchants and partners to unlock the value of being part of the Affirm network. Our goal is to build a flexible, scalable, and robust platform to enhance the purchasing experience online and in-store.

The Merchant Risk Intelligence & Platform (MRIP) team builds functionalities to automate merchant risk assessment throughout their lifecycle with Affirm. We develop the backend platform that, combined with work from cross-functional teams, enables ML engineers to build models for automating decision-making. Our responsibilities include onboarding new merchants, monitoring trends, and ensuring smooth risk management processes.

What You'll Do

• Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, lead engineers through ambiguity, and support delivery.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics teams during product development, articulating technical constraints and making informed decisions.
• Identify and advocate for project, process, and technical improvements.
• Support team operations by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating issues, and maintaining system availability.
• Foster a culture of quality and ownership through code reviews, design standards, and technical talks.
• Develop talent by providing feedback, guidance, and leading by example.

What We Look For

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Experience with highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of monitoring and alerting tools like Sentry, Rollbar, Chronosphere, Kibana.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and architectural impacts on performance and maintainability.
• Ability to define technical plans for significant features with elegant, simple, and extensible designs.
• Proficiency in making impactful changes safely in large codebases, with tools and practices to support this.
• Ownership of personal growth, seeking feedback proactively.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration.
• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Grade: N; Equity Grade: 8. Compensation includes base salary, potential equity, stipends, and comprehensive benefits such as health coverage, flexible spending accounts, time off, and stock purchase plans.
