Job summary

PTR Global is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Lab Informatics to architect and build the digital laboratory platform focused on Benchling integration. You will partner with scientists, automation engineers, and data teams to translate scientific workflows into scalable software solutions.

You will contribute to Benchling configuration, data modeling, and application development, while ensuring data is structured, traceable, and reusable with strong engineering practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, bioinformatics, software engineering, computational biology, or related field, or equivalent.
• 5 years of professional software engineering or scientific informatics experience.
• Hands-on experience with Benchling platform development (Apps, App Canvas, APIs/SDK, Events, Insights, Data Warehouse).
• Strong Python and SQL development skills.
• Experience developing production-quality applications, APIs, and system integrations.
• Proficiency with REST APIs, webhooks, authentication/authorization, and structured data models.
• Experience with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, and modern software engineering practices.
• Working knowledge of life-science R&D workflows and scientific data.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with scientists and technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Job Overview:
The Senior Software Engineer, Lab Informatics will play a pivotal role in architecting, building, and evolving the digital laboratory platform for a leading nonprofit research institute. This position will focus on leveraging Benchling as a core component to support scientific discovery and collaboration. The role involves partnering with scientists, automation engineers, and data teams to translate complex scientific workflows into scalable and reliable digital solutions. The engineer will contribute to Benchling configuration, scientific data modeling, application and integration development, laboratory automation, analytics, and platform architecture. This position ensures that scientific data is structured, traceable, accessible, and reusable while establishing strong software engineering practices.

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with scientists and cross-functional teams to understand experimental workflows and translate scientific needs into technical solutions.
• Design, develop, and maintain the Benchling environment, including schemas, Registry entities, Results, Inventory, workflows, notebook templates, and applications.
• Develop production-quality applications and integrations using Benchling Developer Platform tools such as APIs, SDKs, Apps, App Canvas, and webhooks.
• Design and maintain scalable scientific data models to ensure data integrity, traceability, and long-term reuse.
• Build scientific analytics, dashboards, and data applications using Benchling Insights, SQL, Python, and visualization frameworks.
• Integrate Benchling with laboratory instruments, automation platforms, internal applications, and external scientific software.
• Implement workflows for reliable transfer of experimental data between laboratory automation systems and Benchling.
• Establish and follow software engineering best practices, including source control, code review, automated testing, CI/CD, and maintainable software architecture.
• Ensure consistent implementation of data standards and maintain high levels of data quality and integrity.
• Serve as a technical subject matter expert for Benchling, advising on platform architecture, data modeling, integrations, and development best practices.
• Troubleshoot complex platform, application, and integration issues, identifying root causes and implementing scalable solutions.
• Contribute to the technical roadmap for laboratory informatics and evaluate new technologies to improve scientific productivity.
• Develop technical documentation, user guidance, and training materials to support adoption of laboratory informatics tools.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture discussions, code reviews, and mentorship of engineers and technical colleagues.

Pay Range: $130,000 – $160,000
